Is there anyway to stop turtles from taking the bait?
Went catfishing the other day. Caught one on the first cast, after that I had the bait stolen by turtles in 5 casts over 3 hours. Last cast i hooked one and just had to let him go with the hook. Using this bait with a treble like it tells you to. Is there anyway to stop turtles from taking the bait?

Spray WD-40 on it, turtles hate it.

Pretty sure it's illegal and immoral to poison turtles

I have never had much luck on that stuff I may have to give it another look.

Its good, look at the reviews on amazon, thats where I found it. But make sure you know there’s alot of catfish where your fishing too before you say something doesn’t work or give up on it (i dont mean that in a rude way). This was my first time trying it, only bought it cause I couldn’t find chicken liver and it’s alot less messy and easier to deal with too so thats a plus. This pond i’ve been fishing at is stocked with catfish and bass too so I know they’re there, definitely would’ve caught more if turtles didn’t keep stealing my bait.

Also depends on what the fish like, I've also used this in a place I know produces good catfish in numbers and only had a bite. That being said I'd switch to something sturdier like cut bait, theres no real way of stopping turtles unless you want (and can legally in your area) to do a little turtle culling.

Try leaving pizza on the shore. I saw this in a documentary featuring 4 turtle brothers...

No idea how to help your turtle dilemma but you should try jumbo shrimp that you leave in the sun for the morning. Me and my buddies have had great success. Cheap bait too. Use a catfish rig with this as bait. Works on the red or Assiniboine in Canada anyway.

I second this. Shrimp is excellent bait for catfish.

might work ill look into it. depends how big the shrimps are cause these turtles are big. snapping turtles.

We used huge shrimp I think the brand was “Tai or Taipan or something like that.” And cat fish rigs.

If you are using set lines, I would highly recommend using circle hooks instead... it will help with the turtle problem and you'll leave less hooks in fish after the release.

Hell, Hoss: Always take a sharp knife and cut off their head. This way, eventually you will either kill them all, or they will take a hint! Also, a .22 long rifle is quite effective. Depending upon the laws of your state? Just Sayin, RJS
