Back to an opinion question. I sometimes fish a small reservoir for largemouth. It’s a relatively clear water lake. I have a friend that insists on fishing with 17 pound nanofil braid. I use exclusively mono for clear water fishing, usually 10 pound or less. I easily out fish this friend 3 : 1 on any given day. Is it the braid? I think so, or it may be my uncanny ability to communicate with the fish (but I kinda doubt that). As stated earlier in this thread, you don’t need 20 pound line to catch a 4 pound fish. Watch the pros when they fish a drop shot or Ned rig. 6 pound test for this type of finesse fishing. Back to it being a personal preference thing. But the lower weight braid, 8 or 10 pound will definitely out cast the same weight mono or flouro. Do your own test and go from there.

In that situation, very clear water, line visibility might surly be a problem.
Under those circumstances I would opt to use either mono or flouro. At the least a leader of a few feet anyway.
The water I fish for Stripers is pretty stained all the time. If you have 2 feet of visibility that's really good. Usually 6 inches to a foot is about the norm.
Therefore, using braid tied straight to a lure doesn't affect our catch rate. Plus, I don't really think Stripers are that line shy to begin with. At least the ones we fish for, but that might be just because the visibility is so low. IDK.

Saw, I have to agree on the braid for stripers. Not sure about your left coast fish but the Chesapeake Bay stripers that I fish for are as dumb as a box of hammers. However, they are eating machines. I believe they would hit a topwater plug or a jerk bait if tied on to hunk of clothesline. Fun to catch but not terribly challenging. That said, braid has never seemed to bother them.

Hi all,
Looking for opinions on braid fishing line. I fish from shore (saltwater), using a spinning reel casting for salmon. I currently use 10 lb mono and have pretty good success with it, but with all the hype about braided line was wondering if I should give it a try.. I know there are some advantages like no line stretch, longer casts, etc.
Is there a better brand of braid to try if I decide to go that route? Thanks for any advice.

I used a braided line (15 Lb) for silvers in Juneau and I never looked back. The brand for me wasn't that important, the casting was way easier (and casting farther)

So what makes him a expert , everyone and their brother has a you-tube channel now.

Didn't say he was an expert, but being a pro fisherman and wanting to know what the best lines are for him, and then sharing, makes him pretty credible in my book. Have a look for yourself, you might learn something.

I wonder if? Has there ever been a large blind test of all line types cheap vs expensive / quality? Might be interesting.

Hi from Morro Bay
I use braided 40lb for Ling cod. I can get alot more line on as we are now dropping to 350/400 feet.
20lb mono leader at 25 feet.

I use power pro which is a good all around braided line with a florocarbon leader tied on with Alberto knot. Works great on local walleyes.

Would anyone share if braid would work on spin casting reels as well as level winding? And if so do you increase the length of line to put on the reel because of the reduction in diameter?
