Hi all,
Looking for opinions on braid fishing line. I fish from shore (saltwater), using a spinning reel casting for salmon. I currently use 10 lb mono and have pretty good success with it, but with all the hype about braided line was wondering if I should give it a try.. I know there are some advantages like no line stretch, longer casts, etc.
Is there a better brand of braid to try if I decide to go that route? Thanks for any advice.

Braided is great. I can cast farther and for the same diameter as 10lb mono you can't get 30lb test. It's more expensive of course. No stretch is good too.You still want mono for leader though.

Oh man ! My computer just ate/lost the LONG response I had almost finished typing to you.
So I'll just give a short version.
I've used braid for almost 10 years.
I use to use the more expensive braid that cost around 40 dollars for 300 yards.
I then bought two 1097 yard spools of Kastking off Ebay for around 20 dollars apiece + shipping.
My latest is buying Dyneema Situation Extreme Braid from TEMU. It's 4 to 5 dollars for a 500 meter spool. AND everything is free shipping.
That's the line I was using when I hooked that HUGH Sturgeon on Friday, fought it for 20 min.
Look up my post, Napa 4 12 24, you'll like the story.
The knot I had tied the lure clip on was probly at least 3 weeks or more old. (I know, I should retie much more often)
ANYWAY. I catch just as many fish with the cheap stuff as the expensive stuff, and the quality of the line doesn't seem to be affected. BUT, that's just my opinion.

I wonder if? Has there ever been a large blind test of all line types cheap vs expensive / quality? Might be interesting.

There a fella on u-tube that done a test on strength of different sizes, but can’t remember who it was.

Just type, a testing on fishing lines strength pound pull, it should be easy to find !!!
Good luck 🍀👍🏽

Saw1, Thanks for the reply, I always follow your posts even though I live in Washington, must have been an epic battle with the sturgeon. Most important, prayers go out to you and your mom at this time.

Power Pro. I use 20 pound on my salt water rigs and caught a lot of stripers and drum on it. Has never let me down. But it’s just my opinion and preference.

all my rods (both fresh and salt) have braid. I use Suffix 832 , from 4# on my ultralight stuff to 30# on my salt. And no you don't need 100# line to catch 100# fish. My surf gear has 10# braid with 30# fluoro leader and I can cast a lot farther then the guys using 30# mono. caught a 65# shark on that gear.

I would definitely recommend braid.
Power Pro, Sussex , j braid all good
Strength, casting distance are pluses.
Wind knots can be a con.

The guy who does the tests is Luke Simmonds from Salt Strong. If you’ve never heard of the fish club, it’s definitely worth looking into.
Nothing but great things to say about them for minimal membership cost. Save lots of money on equipment , including braid!

Interesting post Scraps. I Googled it; looks like something I will check on. In reference to the original post, I've tried several brands of braid. The ones with more fibers hold up better. I like Power Pro 20# yellow for visibility. One post on here a while back indicated fish see red and green. So don't know for sure if yellow if a problem for fish.

Like one suggestion listed, be careful casting into the wind with a light lure. Nasty mess for sure.

On my light tackle, I have the cheapest braid money can buy. At 6lb test, my old eyes have trouble seeing the line. This stuff is at a mono 2lb size. Yesterday I went to my pond to try out a new lure. The 'sqitters' ran me off, but not before catching a 2lb bass. It flipped over and the line was wrapped into one of the treble hooks. While trying to untangle something I can't see, the fish decided to wiggle, and now I have three fingers with holes in them.
