Hope44, on looking at that bass a little closer, by its marking I am pretty certain it is a "spot" as we call them around here. Also if it were caught out of one of the Chattahoochee chain of lakes around here, it would be considered a trophy spot. The largest one I have ever seen personally was caught out of West Point Lake. One of my friends was fishing with me in my boat and caught it on a Bagley DB3 crankbait. It weighed a little over 5 pounds. That is a huge one for West Point lake.
Well made it a good trip. Nice catch.
Tim, I believe it was Lake Perris that got those Alabama Spots ..... they are no longer there, sadly, but those footballs were real bull dogs when hooked ....
Halopower, thanks for the correction. I read that in an Alabama Fish and Game magazine I used to subscribe to way back then. I think it was in an article about the spot world record which at that time had been held by a Lewis Smith lake "Alabama Strain" spotted bass, was broken out in California. For some reason when I saw Castaic come up here and the bass looked like a spot, my 70 year old memory went back to that article.
Spotted bass do pull hard, even small ones. There is a fishing guide over in Wetumpka AL that made a prediction a year or two ago that the next world record spot would come from the Coosa River below Jordan Dam. After seeing the videos of those being caught from Bullard Bar Lake in CA, I doubt his prediction will ever come true. There are no salmon fry in the Coosa river...
I'm pretty sure it was a large mouth, heck I didn't really pay any attention. Good 2 know for next time
So rad! That's a nice size catch! I requested fishing at Castaic Lake this Sunday for mother's Day and I'm giddy with excitement. Hope I have a much luck as you did.
Good luck to you. Some nice trout have been caught there recently
