Say Andy. What do you use for the finish coat? I've been using spar urethane, but I'm open to suggestions. There are only certain things I can shoot through my airbrushed, but if it sprays from a can I would try it.

Flytier, I tried to send a PM don't think I did it right so if you got it ok if not here's what I sent you. After paint is dry I wait 24 hrs for it to set. Then I use the water based Polyurethane most of the time I just dip them and let them hang over the open can for about 5 minutes. You can spray this with your airbrush. Cut it with water about 15% put on a couple coats. Then comes the epoxy after about 2 hrs or dry time for the poly. The Devcon and the Glaze coat work very well I add a few drops of alcohol to loosen it up a little then paint it on with a brush. Then right on to my turner and as it's going around I hit it with a quick shot of the heat gun on low temp to let it run together and take out any air bubbles. Then just let it turn for hours. The BSI epoxy is new to me I'm just getting use to putting it on . I believe it got a tad of alcohol too. Again I brushed it on and followed the same steps but it cures much quicker. ( Make ) Small Batches) . PS I weigh my two parts to get an exact mix .
I did watch a video using BSI and the guy brushed it on and hung it up to cure . I haven't tried this yet with a good lure but my sample piece seemed ok. No runs. . I use a Badger Patriot 105 to apply the water based poly and it cleans up ok. But I'm far from attempting epoxy. Someone to check out on YTube is The Engineer Angler. Hope this helps , I don't use the can spray because it seems to mostly go to mist and doesn't get very thick coverage. 🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🇺🇲🇺🇲🙏

why not simply using Flex-coat, it's designed for rod building

I pick up clearance priced nail polish at the drugstore. A myriad of colors including glitter colors. Can get for as little as $.25/.50 per bottle.

Are these polishes stable or safe to use on lures that will be repetitively dunked in water without any type of sealant layer or curative process or do you need to take them to the Asian nail salon to expose them to their light units used for “painted” fingernails of their normal customer base?

I ask because I colored a couple lead jig heads with nail polish a few years back and it is as if they never dried, still being tacky, sticky or gummy. Does nail polish go bad or expire if kept for many years in such a way that would render it useless because of the uncured result I had with my attempt?

I don’t expect to find too many nail polish aficionados within this group, but I will never know if I don’t ask.

I use nail polish for head cement on certain flies I tie. Never had a problem with any that I used.

I don’t know if it goes bad with age. I’ve never gotten around to painting my jigs or lures. The bottles of polish are still in a bag in a bucket in the cellar. Was going to be a winter project, but that was several winters ago.🙄 I have more I’ll get to it later projects than I have lifetime left I think. Something always seems to be a higher priority than painting tackle🙁

Hello stagers,
I have a unique fishing lure that needs painting.
It's a plastic crank bait.
My question is:
Can I use Testers model paint or should I opt for a specialty designed paint sold in catalogs such as Barlows or Net Craft?
Would either one make a difference or be more environmentally safe?
Commander Bell out 👍

Are you gonna airbrush ? If so, try createx water based airbrush paint . Then , after it is very dry , put a clear coat over it . Createx makes a water based clear . Personally I dip my painted lures in KBS clear finish .it’s kinda expensive and without proper storage it will harden . KBS is not water based….. there are epoxies that are clear that will work also, but you gotta mix it…good luck …. My 2cents…

If it's a lure you are going to fish I suggest one that leaves no odor. Had a friend used Sally Hansens hard as nails, nail polish as "head" cement on his Clousers he tied up and every time he opened the fly box the odor would knock you off your feet. They never caught any fish either.
