Thanks Bob for removing it. I wasn't offended just didn't want to see the thread end up in the attic.

I wasn't the one that removed it. But I did get schooled in the text. No problem here.

I’m not from that area, is that a major route for that area? They mentioned that there were construction going on the bridge.

Not construction, just maintenance. 6 lives lost 'tho. Sooo sad! Yes, it WILL be a traffic nightmare.

I've fished under that bridge many times. Striped Bass, perch and catfish hotspot. I've sailed under her many times aboard cruise ships heading north to Canada, and south to the caribbean. Our new status as one of the largest ports of call in the US is in jeopardy. Supply chain nightmares, here we come.

Just passed over Chesapeake Bay Bridge on 50E on the way to Chincoteague earlier today, and just as I thought, a lineup of freighters and container ships as far as the eye can see to my right, anchored along the channel. Wish I could've taken a snapshot but not able to since I was driving.

Port of Baltimore Safety Zone – Message from the U.S. Coast Guard

Effective immediately, a safety zone is established for all navigable waters of the Chesapeake Bay within a 2,000-yard radius of the Francis Scott Key (FSK) Bridge. The 948-foot Singapore-flagged vessel DALI struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge on March 26, 2024.

The safety zone is intended to protect personnel, vessels, and the marine environment in these navigable waters. No vessel or person will be permitted to enter the safety zone without obtaining permission from the Captain of the Port (COTP) or a designated representative. The COTP is currently issuing a Broadcast Notice to Mariners (BNM) via VHF-FM marine channel 16. Mariners are requested to monitor the VHF channel 16 for the latest information.

To seek permission to enter, contact the COTP or the COTP’s representative by telephone at (410) 576–2525 or on Marine Band Radio VHF–FM channel 16 (156.8 MHz). Those in the safety zone must comply with all lawful orders or directions given to them by the COTP or the COTP’s designated representative. The U.S. Coast Guard may be assisted in the patrol and enforcement of the safety zone by Federal, State, and local agencies.

If you have any questions regarding the contents of this bulletin, please contact the Command Center at (410) 576-2525, or via email at d05-smb-sectormd-ncr-scc@uscg.mil.

This is absolutely tragic. Baltimore Key Bridge: 'Mass casualty event' as bridge hit by ship collapses into river -

This was tragic but one point no one has brought up, is the lack of protection around the bridge pears. I spend the winter in Destin. fl and on the bay side, all the bridges have, what I describe as bumper.
This channel has very large barge traffic and these would prevent this type of accident.
Not an engineer but common sense??

The news is saying that the bridge was built in the 70's and at the time met requirements of the smaller cargo ships with deflectors on both sides. The deflectors that are there are of much smaller size from what the pictures are showing is all that was required in the 70's.

I will bet that with a new one going to be built bumper / deflectors will be installed to meet the current cargo ship size.
