Here is a tip... When setting your spinning rod/reel down on the ground or anywhere actually, always place it down on the handle side of the reel. This will keep it up/off of the ground or any abrasive surface.
It doesn't require any extra effort or skill. Just do it.

Btw, fish rules app lists that as a blue tilapia. But no info as to state record.

It says the state record is 10lbs for a 20 in fish.
I think mine was 16-17 in so maybe 6-7 lbs.
It was heavy. That is a beauty by your nephew.
You are right about the rod but I was kinda excited😂
