I bought 3 old fly reels at a yard sale few years ago and put 2 on old bamboo 3 peace fly rods. One is a Shakespeare and the other one is JC Higgins 100. The rods were given to me by 2 old friends that had grown up together in West Vergina. One of them moved here to Wy. after retirement which was almost 30 years ago. He kept track of our fishing days one summer and told me we fished 40 days in a row either early morning, evenings or weekends. We also hunted elk together most of those years. They both have past away a few years ago. I have a lot of memories of them.

it seems to me ( just sayin') that old.... vintage...or whatever...seems to last. whether furniture, autos, alot of my fishing gear, etc..the new stuff that we pay too much for just seems to be made to break or just cheap quality. i furnished my home with vintage (circa 20 to late 40'). jeeze.. the house was built in 1930.....but it burned down..loosing my 17 yr old coonie Arthur....SEANCHARA.........anyway, i rebuilt and refurnished and all was junk....another time....guess the point is nothing is made like vintage used and i will always continue to fish with redone older reels with rods that have the back bone to catch fatty blue cats, striper or those lovely tasting crappie.......i fish ugly and am hard on the tools i use..hence i can't see shelling out big money for todays gear when the better stuff is out of my price range.. i'm a 67 year old collerectal cancer survivor......anyway...

Purchase some old, out of service rods. Cut off the rod just pass the handle. Clean up the handles. Mount the handles to a nice stained piece of wood that can be mounted to a wall. or propped up on a shelf. I'm thinking 6-12 rods on one board. 2 rows of 6 rods or a single row of 6 rods. These rods will stick straight out, or out on a 45 deg angle. Each rod will have 1 of your reels attached. Sorry, I don't have any pictures, except for a mental image. Picture those display reels at Cabela's, only without the counter space.

We live in a throwaway society. Every thing is made so that we can’t fix or costs more to fix then price of new.

I’m convinced that any thing with a circuit board has a kill switch that shuts off after a predetermined time or number of duty cycles. I believe that the machine is still functional but the brain will not let it power on.

Not to pop your bubble, reels from 1824 would be 200 years old, 1924 would be 100 and quite possibly in his collection.

I saw a collection of old reels displayed hanging from a ceiling like a mobile. It was really cool. Looked like the solar system with many planets being the reels. It was hanging in a log cabin with high ceiling, probably 25 reels.

HI! If I am not mistaking "ANTIQUES" are 100 years old or more. If you do have some reels from 1824 or before I would be interested. Not to pop your bubble, reels 20 years and older are "VINTAGE".

Not to pop your bubble but
I think we all would be interested in seeing a reel from 1824 lol

You just never know when you post on this site. I really did not expect this to become a discussion on "antiques" Nonetheless, I got some good ideas on my original question. Thanks all.

I have about 30 antique reels. Some are spinning, some fly, some baitcasting and a few mooching reels. I am looking for good ways to display them, on a shelf on the wall or any other way. I have woodworking skill and tools to make what I need. I am open to any suggestions, especially with attached photos. I have to give credit to Tuboshu for inspiring me to create this topic. Thanks in advnce

I too have collected a good many vintage reels, lures, etc over the years. Years ago I acquired a boat bookshelf at a garage sale. They made me a deal I couldn't refuse- Buy the 3 books I was looking at and they'd throw in the American flag sided bookshelf. I used to use it as a bookshelf in my bedroom, stocked with my bedtime reading material. After wife re designed bedroom decor the boat shelf went down into my office area not far from my lure collections. It didn't take long to put 2 + 2 together, Viola'.

Forward to last year. As a retired cabinet maker (past boat builder) I decided to take a pattern of the boat shelf and build a few out of my stock of materials. I used re-sawn weathered Cedar fence boards and some Walnut paneling for a trail. Results were very pleasing. My favorite is the weathered Cedar............

Iv'e sold a few by word of mouth. Haven't thought of advertising, don't want to jeopardize my retirement (Hah that's a joke. Been busier than when I was working for a living.)

So I am happy with my display, although it only handles a small portion of my collection...................

Is the the fly reel in the upper left corner of the first picture a Pflueger? I have 3 that look like it. Don't know what year they were made. Used one of my old bamboo fly rods with one of old reels and floating line to catch Yellowstone caught throat trout this last summer. You have a very nice collection and display. Thank you for showing it.
