Wow, I've never had one go bad after only 3 months.
My boat use to sit out in a lot under the elements and I never had one of their tarps go bad after only 3 months. I easily got close to a year or more out of every tarp I got from Harbor Freight. Sorry you had a bad experience.

It was a silver one,I think 11 mil

Does anyone know of a boat cover that is truly waterproof? The cover that came with the boat (Crestliner) doesn't keep the rain out and the boat is parked outside.

Thanks for your help.

Try Sealskin cover. I had one on 14ft semi-V boat that satoutside in storage lot for 15 months. When I picked up boat the cover had 10 -12" of water pooled in section between last two seats
None in the boat itself. I will not buy anything else.

Back when I had my boat I started just buyin a tarp from Harbor Freight for 25 to 30 bucks and would bungie it down. I usually got a 12X20 or so . Found it to be water proof and cheap.

I would use a tarp if the boat was behind my fence but it's parked next to my driveway. I'm concerned there might be a city ordnance that prohibits covering a vehicle/boat in front of the fence. I've tried searching for an ordnance without success.

Thanks for your advice, SAW.

I keep mine sprayed with water proofing spray I buy from any big box store or in my case I buy it at Cabela's with my wife's discount. But the only time my boat isn't garaged is when we are on the trip. A tarp would be my choice too if it was parked outside all the time.

I was wondering if the cover I have needs to be sparyed with a sealer.

I was able to get my first boat, a 16ft 1982 Bass Tracker III, in the garage but this one is too long.

Thanks for your advice about the sealer.

Good luck. I hope you find a cheaper solution than a custom cover. Those are kinda spency.

Cabelas sells covers for storage by size and style of the boat. They're water resistant but not waterproof. For winter storage a add a medium duty tarp, a step up from the blue tarps. And bungie it tight. Works well for longterm

Yeah. I'm finding several described as "water resistant". I did communicate with the Seal Skin Cover folks and they said their top of the line premium cover is waterproof and has a 10 year warranty. I was hoping a stager has tried them.

Thanks for your advice.

Around here. I’ve never seen a custom made cover that held up to winters. They all end up shredded. I worked in this field for 5 years. They shrink wrap all the boats that sit outside at the marinas around here and that stays intact but those are notorious for creating moisture issues within them. Only sure bet is to get it out of the weather entirely. With the cover then the tarp my boat stays bone dry but it’s small and I know the correct way to tarp it so it stays on properly.

Plastic tarps do not breathe. You can try your best to cover your boat, but there’s not a plastic tarp that prevents moisture buildup, which is the most problem. As far as u saying that professionally made covers are not an option I question that! There are many high end boats in our harbors that have high quality custom made waterproof canvas covers and their boats are well protected.

I do the exact same thing Jimmy does. I’ve also added a PVC frame to support the tarp that makes the water shed off quickly with no place to accumulate.

Thanks for the advice of adding a frame if I go that route.

Try to find a swimming pool cover that can be cut to fit, add grommets for bungee/rope. Not real pretty, but works.

Good thought about using the pool cover, I had a pool when I lived in Las Cruces, NM. The covers only lasted a year or 2 but that was probably due to the chlorine in the pool water.
My concern would be the not pretty part.

Thanks,

I've been checking them out. They said their top of the line premium cover is truly waterproof.

Great to hear you have one of theirs and recommend it.

Thanks for your advice.

I use one of those inexpensive canopies you can get at Harbor Freight to park my boat under with its cover on. This keeps most of the rain and snow off the boat cover. The canopy I got is a 10X20 foot one. I've had it for about 15 years now, still works well.

I've not known anyone to use one of the canopies, good to hear they work. This may be an option to use with the cover I have.

I've thought of using a canopy when I wash the cars, it would help with waters spotting.

Thanks for your advice.

There are several businesses in my area who make custom fit 100 percent waterproof boat covers. They are not cheap, but worth it in my option especially if your boat is stored outside in heavy weather winter states. I’ve seen many boats that have custom made waterproof covers, especially boats that are docked year round in harbors. You get what you pay for. To me plastic tarps as hard as you’ve tried never protect your boat from the elements! Yeah they are cheap They may stop a good percentage of the rain but 90% of the time it’s the moisture effect that does the most damage. Just my opinion!

The cover on the boat is custom fitted from crestliner and cost over $1400 purchased with the boat. I can imagine what a custom cover for a larger boat kept in a marina would cost. I wonder if they are sealed with a product or if it's layered material that makes them waterproof.
I don't think my cover leaks all over the complete surface, I don't find the boat wet inside after a rain. However, there is lots of water in the hull that I have to remove by tilting the bow up.

I lived in colorado springs for a few years and they put shrink wrap on boats there during the winter. I had a 3 car garage and a shorter boat then so it fit in the garage.

Thanks for your advice.
