I use an egg carton when servicing my reels. When parts come off the reel, they go into the carton in the order they came off. Re assembly is in reverse order.

I do the same.
Taking pictures with your phone as you take it apart helps if you’re new at taking them apart.

I have some ardent grease and oil that came from Walmart and recently got some from Cabela’s, the Walmart here hardly has anything anymore

I always hear oil in bearings grease on gears,
And a little goes a long way
So when you get a new reel and you open it up to make sure it’s lubricated correctly and you find that it looks like they smeared a whole tube of grease in there.
Anyway now I have to figure out how to put it back together

You can use high temp red grease. A qtip and toothpick helps to apply. Just needs a little on gears. Unless it’s in dust and dirt it’s good for a LONG time. Submerged in salt water can be bad but put rods and reels in your shower if don’t want to use hose. Then they can drip fry too

I learned about salt water lol, salt water ruined one of my wife’s reels
Normally I fish fresh water

Good job T. Poor eyes and ten beat up thumbs is my burden. Knots aren't bad, go through the motions, usually works out. Pin-holing a tiny spring post is a different story. Thank you all for good advice.

An ole timer fisher man told me a long time ago (before all the fancy stuff to spend money on for reels) to use a "drop" of automatic transmission fluid on the bearings and plain ole Vaseline on the gears. I did find that Vaseline in the summer would get hot and thin out requiring re-application. Never did have any problem with the bearings. I have mostly Shimano casting reels and Garcia spinning reels.

When I was young I used Vaseline on my spinning reels.
Didn't use baitcasters then 👍

My dad showed me a trick. Take some of the Vaseline and mix powered graphite in it. Used it for a light weight wheel bearing grease on the bearing of my bikes. Told that to some younger kids for their skate boards and they later told me it worked as good or better than the small tubes of grease for $5 that they had been buying.
The powered graphite can be bought at like Advance Auto for a tube of it. The Vaseline acts as the carrier for the graphite.

That makes a whole lot of sense right there, graphite is a very good lubricant and the vaseline to hold it together and in place,
Not sure I’ll try it but I will try to keep it in my memory if it can handle it, might try it someday on something

You may be able to find an online manual with an exploded view of the reel. That will help you identify what went where.

That’s what happens sometimes you open them up and they explode,
I figured it out and got it back together

I use all old gear and when it makes noise I open it up, clean it out and pack it with Vaseline.

Photos, photos, photos. Before and during disassembly. The egg carton idea is great too.
