Is a steelhead in Idaho different from a steelhead in California? Steelhead in California are anadromous rainbow trout. They are "born" in fresh water, go live and fatten up in the sea, and return to fresh water to spawn. They are some damn tough hombres that can adapt and survive in both environments. Rainbow trout per se do not have access to the sea and spend their lives in fresh water. How does a trout in the Salmon River in Idaho have access to the sea?

Via the Columbia and Snake rivers.

Specific info helps too because there is also a Salmon River in Pulaski New york . It's one of the Lake Erie tribs and has a hatchery there. Good salmon and steelhead fishing.

Thanks Gordon where I was mistaken is he was on 95 south. No mention of interstate or hwy. That's what assuming does.

We are talking Idaho here. The drive on 95 from Chalis to Salman Idaho is one of the greatest and most beautiful drive you could ever see. That is what the trucker was talking about. It is the Salman River and the steelhead and Salman do spend time in the ocean and make it all the way back to spawn.

Looking on the map. That does look like a nice drive. How about 93 which it is also called the Lewis and Clark Trail. Is that a good drive also.

I thought odd #'s ran north and south. Like 95 Florida to Maine and 70 goes east west from MD to California.

Bring me up to speed please DB since you are on the road more than i.

I 95 is the East coast interstate hwy. US 95 is a state hwy in Idaho.

No reservoirs from the pacific to the salmon river? Amazing. And what an amazing fish. The salmon do it, but then they die. The rainbows survive and go back to the ocean.

There are 4 dams on the Snake river and 4 more on the Columbia river. They all have fish ladders for the fish to go around these dams.
Really neat to do down into the fish viewing rooms and watch . They employ people to count fish going up stream so they know what the run is doing count wise.
So the fish are not land locked like some people think.
