Ya think? Another day like this makes me think about a trip to Jeffries Ledge for haddock.

That's a significant trip.

Sounds like you had a great day for a great boat. My Grady White was hauled on the 15th when the Marina closed. I have been fishing the Prong when the conditions permit. The last trip was all sub-legal haddock and a few short cod. The floor of the Prong was wall-to-wall pollock. I have not tried the Curl. For me the season is over. Not because the boat is out, but because I do not like wasting my time and bait on pollock.

I was wondering how your season progressed after the slow start. We got a few legal cod and a bunch of shorts. Did the pollock on Jeffries have any size to them?

During July and August, fishing at Jeffries was fair. On an average day I might take home 3-4 keeper haddock and throw back a dozen shorts. Although out of season we might land 2-3 market size cod (7-10 lbs). Only one in Sept.
There were some pollock, but not what I was seeing this last week. On my fish finder, I can identify the schools of pollock, and they must have been 2 feet thick over the entire floor. I usually keep the pollock for lobster bait, but the train of hurricanes prompted me to pull my traps at the end of August.

By the Isles of Shoals the small harbor pollock (8-12”) are thick, as you see in the picture. Kind of a pain when you want mackerel. On my finder they show up as a blue cloud on the screen. How big are the pollock on Jeffries?

They are small, 10-12". A good size for lobster trap bait.

Thanks. They are fun for a bit, but the fun gets old quickly.

Wish I could get out on a small boat to fish. I went on party boats 2 times this year first for 8 hour trip to Jefferies ledge and only got 1 keeper haddock and what would have been a keeper cod IF it was in season. Second trip was a 12 hour trip and they kept me busy the whole time , 6 keeper pollock and a cusk was all I brought home but got a lot of sub legal cod, pollock and haddock along with more than my share of dog fish all of which went back. Lots of fun and came home tired and hurting but it was a good hurt as I know it was from catching a lot of fish. Love those days.

Hi cpate 17, I've had the same experience. That's why I bought a 21' Grady White to get away from the crowds. This summer I had hoped to take other fisherman out with me, but I was concerned about the short notice with the weather conditions. Maybe next summer.

I will go rain or shine. I have a rain suit not concerned about getting a little wet. Main thing is the wind. If it is too windy it would be a beating getting to the fishing grounds. Just let me know when and where next summer. I am going to try to have at least one rod and reel for deep sea fishing and a couple set ups for stripers. If you want you can send me a message with your phone number and name and I will send you my number in a reply to that message.

Aside from catching fish, my main concern is safety. My limits are seas forecast to be no more than 2 to 3 feet and winds no greater than 20 mph. No significant fog. I go Jeffries for haddock. I do not do strippers. If haddock fishing is slow, I may consider halibut. I like to communicate by email: jewelvin@rcn.com.
