That is awesome you did that. Wished I would have! I hope we have enough younger kids to keep the outdoors going. So many kids now have zero interest.

It is easy to criticize Fish and Game given the price of license fees. Salmon, abalone and now white sturgeon have closed or reduced seasons or tightened regulations.

Can you imagine what would happen if California Fish and Game did not try to manage fish and game levels?

Plant disease, overfishing, poaching, pollution, storms and many other reasons have reduced animal populations. For those of us that pay license fees, we may feel annoyed that the very thing we want has been taken away. Why are they doing this to me? Am I right?

What would happen if there were no regulations on salmon, abalone or sturgeon? Just take whatever you want all day long. No limits. Take it all. How long do you think it would take before the salmon or sturgeon are more depleted than they are today. No more fishing with the grandchildren or their grandchildren. Too extreme for you? Look what happened to the buffalo. They were killed for fun and hunted to near extinction. (The loss of the buffalo also annihilated a civilization.) I don't want to see salmon, abalone or any other game completed removed for my own activity or my kids or their kids.

I just bought a larger boat as well Bob to go striper and sturgeon fishing. My grandson will still go fishing with me. We will just use barbless hooks and be more careful how we handle fish.

I believe sometimes it is easy to criticize fish and wildlife. I’m my opinion it’s has become political, especially on the commercial side. It’s also my opinion that they are very reactive and should be more proactive. I’ll use abalone as an example. When I was a kid, and that was awhile ago, I believe the take was 100’s of abalone in a season. Who in their right mind believes that is sustainable. Now there hasn’t been a season for years. This species of fishing has been, again in my opinion, take way to much for to long and now it’s down to zero fishing for many reasons. Years ago I belonged to another fishing club and they did a tremendous amount of work with salmon which included years of growing them and releasing them. I think we, the ones with the limited money and resources have in some case did more to help fisheries than F&W. I’m obviously not opposed to limits, slot size or retention, but I believe F&W can and should do a much better job.

Yup agreed. The worst part is that CDFW has done and are doin n will do all these studies that the only results I see is less fish, higher license fees and ruination. Maybe thats why we have cleaner waters, less fish to pee in it.

Couldn't agree more.

Most of our outdoor recreating colleagues and friends are the best conservationists. Why wouldn't we want to protect what we love to do? CDFW seems more reactive than proactive. Your example of the demise of the abalone population is good example. There are pictures of boatloads of abalone that were taken off of the North Coast. No game management there.

CDFW does not do a good job of telling their story. I don't know of any forum, other than perhaps this one, that CDFW watches the users of their service. There certainly is no public accounting of what they do. It's probably there, but it sure is not obvious.

Ok, I read the article and in my opinion, they are not providing much information other than “counts” and “alge bloom”. Unless I’m missing part of the article or another link to a study. And reducing the slot to 6” at 42” - 48”. I sturgeon fish quite a bit and can’t remember the last time I actually kept one. But I’m getting the feeling this is going the way of the salmon, total closure. The halibut reduced to 2 fish limit, the rock cod early closure. I figure in a few years I’ll be fishing out of state since you won’t be allowed to fish for anything in CA.

I'm waiting for the striper notice in Lumpy's post. I hope this isn't the 30Ă—30 plan. Gov land and water grab.

The ocean is slowly but surely becoming dead. My cousin is commercial fishermen in North Coast. He has some of his Abalone on display at Point Arena Coffee and Breakfast place. Not sure if he agrees about bad management of them. If you ask my opinion of who has caused fishing run to be depleted it’s Commercial Fishing and other Countries in International Waters. We constantly hatch new fish and do all we can but once fish are how ever many miles off shore thieves ( my opinion ) steal them.

Canadian fishing fleets use electronic scanner to check for chips in the Columbia River Salmon that swim through and they keep them and let their own fish go. Tell me that’s fair .
