From my friends at CDFW...

"The California Fish and Game Commission (Commission) enacted emergency regulations yesterday to reduce the harvest of white sturgeon in state waters. The new regulations will reduce the number of fish that can be kept to one per year, reduce the slot limit to 42-48 inches, cap the number of white sturgeon that can be possessed on a vessel at two per day and add seasonal closures to sturgeon fishing in key spawning areas. The new regulations are expected to go into effect in late October or early November following approval by the Office of Administrative Law."

So if 3-5 buddies go out together on a boat and find a nice pod of keepers then only 2 people get to take a fish home. That’s strange. The rest of the rules are similar to Oregon and it has definitely brought the populations back up but we can all keep our fish if it’s a keeper. We were allowed 1 a year for awhile. I think now it’s better but I haven’t been targeting them for quite a few years after our regulations and life changes for me. I wasn’t against doing something to bring them back

Yea our fees keep going up but not our take for our limits. If these biologist making decisions I would get it a little better but where is the proof in the declining numbers. I don't bother doing this fishing. Too much time and heavy gear. Wow

Ok, I read the article and in my opinion, they are not providing much information other than “counts” and “alge bloom”. Unless I’m missing part of the article or another link to a study. And reducing the slot to 6” at 42” - 48”. I sturgeon fish quite a bit and can’t remember the last time I actually kept one. But I’m getting the feeling this is going the way of the salmon, total closure. The halibut reduced to 2 fish limit, the rock cod early closure. I figure in a few years I’ll be fishing out of state since you won’t be allowed to fish for anything in CA.

Yeah I'm 84 and just getting back into fishing the last 3 years. Bought a boat/trailer and all the fishing gear for salmon, stripers, halibut plus light gear for the lake fishing. Now this year salmon closed and somebody said that 2024 was also closed but have not seen that for sure. They are talking about closing striper for 2024 and of course the halibut. I guess I chose the wrong sport to invest my money into as it is looking pretty dim for the amount of money I've spent for fishing in the last 3 years. Plus on top of all that all of the state fees on top which I'm not sure what one is paying for these days..........Probably close to 20,000 and the boat was used.......lol

There is constantly more people globally so there is no way that demand will go down. There is constant studies happening. We were fishing in Sacramento River last September and the Fed Fish and Wildlife were studying Sturgeon then. If you’re really interested in the research this type of thing is always public record so you can get the information you’re asking about. I don’t like the costs either but it’s never going to get cheaper to be alive. It beats the alternative.

I rather doubt they will close ALL fish Always there. If there is no fishing license sold there is NO Fish and Wildlife anymore. All the Executives that costs the most to exist don’t want to go away. Executives in there are really just another normal person called a Manager. I have full support for biologists etc but all the oversight of the people that actually do the work and get bigger paychecks is ridiculous like in any business or government.

Totally agree with Jeremy. No arguments here. You know several years back dfw had a hidden account and there millions in that acvount. Not sure what happened to those funds but sure would've been nice to see it go back into where it came from. Our youth will loose out in the end. My kids in there 30s do not have any interest in self reliance. To them they can care less. Raised them doing all the outdoor fun for 23 years going out enjoy the wild. Now there city dwellers. I just don't know anymore.

I agree just venting. It just seems lately, the last 10 years or so we’ve had quite a few change in regs for a lot of different species. And in my experience once the change is made you never get it back or have to scratch and claw to get some of it back. Kinda like taxes, they never get lowered. I know we are discussing sport fish but my son commercial fishes so I’ve had a lot of discussions with him regarding their rules and regs. So I see the changes on both ends commercially and sport. I believe if the money actually went where it’s Supposed to go, duplicate positions in government were eliminated and they had some skin in the game our fishing conditions or opportunities would be much better.

Smart MoFishin. My wife wanted to buy mine about ten years too. And I said No. Regret. Now I spend almost a hundred bucks a year
