Take a course like fly fishing 101 and learn the basics then “grow” from there.
I always said “ it’s what you learn after you know it all”, that really counts.
Take it slow, you have a lifetime of learning.
There’s no fish in the trees. That was my biggest problem when learning to fly fish. Had there been fish in the trees I would have limited often.
Practice on water where there’s known fish; learn the knots required; learn to have patience; enjoy the wildlife! Learning how to use the tools & gear is much more important than spending $$$ on top notch tools & gear. The main thing is to understand that the activity is addicting. “The drug is the tug”.

Check on the internet for Fly fisher group in your area or Trout unlimited slot the members I m sure would be happy to assist you and may invite you to go fishing with you. ALSO if there is a good fly fishing shop go talk to them. Go to your library they may some good books .
Great advice ! Why more don’t refer to a good shop when starting out is beyond me !
The Grandson will always remember it. I would like to say, if there is a local club to join. That will help you too!.
Its a lot of fun. I’m not a pro by any means but I can fish doing it. My advice is don’t be in hurry and finesse goes a long way. Have a good time and enjoy the simplicity of it all.
Everyone has given good advice. If you can afford it for your area at least a good 6 weight and reel to match. Reel must have a decent drag. For Smallmouth,Trout and Steelhead. The probability of you catching a good size fish in Michigan is a lot better than where I live. Take your time ,check local fly shops for casting and tying lesson. Also BPS and Cabela Stores should teach. Everything free.

FS Digest—I’m new to flyfishing myself. Difference is—I’m 67 years old. But I feel like a kid myself standing in the middle of that trout stream, tying on flies, trying to learn to read the water etc, etc. I hope you love it and get a lifetime of enjoyment out of it. The above recommendation for Big Y Flies is a good one. Also you might YouTube “Mad River Outfitters” and watch Brian Flechsig’s series on flyfishing and fly casting. Push through the frustrations, get good at it and have fun.
