I’d say take your time with things like knots etc, and spend a couple of minutes watching the water before you get in. It’s pretty easy especially early on to freak out when you see a rising fish and stuff things up at the crucial moment. Test your knots and think before you cast. And welcome hey. Where are you going to be fishing mainly?

I usually use a normal ugly stik but I’m a Michigan fisherman I’ve been fishing ever since I can remember but I’m still relatively new to the game because I’m only 15 but I’m just now trying to get into fly fishing.(ps thank you for the tips)

Just start. Only way to advance is just to begin! Get a decent rod, try to find one with lifetime warranty, get some nice fly line. Look up some hatch charts and check out The Big Y website for good cheap flys (25-75 cents a piece) and get out there!

Yes. Don't know what your budget is, but get the best rod you afford, good line, and if you have to skimp skimp on the reel. It's just for holding your line most of the time. Then if you can take find a fly shop (like Orvis) where they teach casting. Fish. Fish. Fish. Enjoy. When you get to be 72 like me you can look back on a life misspent. Joking.

Be sure to fish where you know there are fish. If you’re fishing dead water you’ll never know if what you’re doing is right or wrong. But you will get some casting practice.

Welcome to the Forum, gc. Something you might try. If you have a large gathering at Thanksgiving, see if anyone there is a fly fisherman and talk to them to see what you can pick up.
A lot of people start to fly fish, buy the equipment but never pursue it and are looking for a place to get rid of it.

I helped a young Grandson of a friend to practice the craft a bit. Grandpa bought the lad a entire setup he found at a garage sale FOR WAY CHEAP and then ask me if I could help the Grandson because Grandpa knew nothing about fly fishing at all. The garage sale put the young man completely outfitted for the Fly Fishing part of the hobby 'cept for the flys. Fly Rod, reel w/ line on the reel. I added a leader and a bug w/ the barb cut off so it wouldn't grab in the grass and we started whipping line in Grandpas front yard.('bout 3 acres) After a couple hours of tutelage we went 2 doors down the road to one of Grandpa's neighbors that had a 5? acre pond in his back yard loaded with sunfish. Took the young lad about 'til the 3rd cast before ah keeper size sunfish sucked in the new bug with a barb I had tied on his line. The Boy dragged that sunfish out of that pond and Grandpa Grandson, and I were all laughing and cheering the trophy loudly. That event took place in either '03 or '04 and once Grandson started driving about 4 years later, there wasn't a lake or river within range that was and still isn't being visited by that young man and his Fly rod if there is no Ice on it. In S.E. Michigan BTW, Jer

You & Grandpa did that kid a big favor. Things fell into place just right. He is headed in the right direction now, hopefully, he will stay the course. Thank you!
