Tree booty, who has a location they frequent for lost gear?

I live in a very touristed mountain town and many come here to flyfish. I was out fishing today and decided to check a few various trees that line a popular fishing spot. Ended up with about 12 quality flies going into my boxes.

I honestly love it. Nothing takes the sting out of getting skunked than some free bugs. I’ve a little circuit I check every few weeks that yields a fair amount of flies. Nothing too special, squirmies, copper johns, nymphs are the usual. But sometimes you find custom ties or streamers. Check those trees!

Back when I primarily gear fished, I'd go on lure patrol in a canoe or kayak when the waters were low. There are some popular, shallow bass lakes here where it was surprisingly easy to fill entire tackle boxes with found lures. Most required just new treble hooks and split rings. I used to get kids started with found, rehabbed lures. Haven't been so lucky with flies, but have found a few in a low hanging tree on the seasonal stream that passes for a local river.

It’s those trees that get me. Tree fish are abundant. That’s a pretty cool thing to get kids started with the found gear. Even with crap flies found, sometimes the hooks are able to be retied.

These days I live in a place where there aren't many fly fisherfolk, so the scavenged booty tends to be all big hook bait hooks and huge sinkers and the occasional lure.

And mono. Miles of mono. And sometimes braid.

I've got one of those little PioPod things from Fishpond tacked to my warmwater sling, and I dump it probably once a month. Glad you're finding useful stuff!

I find lots of mono too. I need one of those pods, I just stash it in a pocket

The pod thing was a gift, and it's clearly superfluous gear that nobody really needs. But I will admit that it's nice when it comes to big rusty hooks that I really don't want floating around in either my pockets or my fly boxes, and it also does a good job of taming the unruly mono coils.

That’s kind of the way I feel about it too. A home made kind could be made easily as well. Could be a simple winter project. Or hell, a tin can works!

My father and I collect lost bobbers, we have a string of them about 40 deep.

Used to go snorkeling for lost gear and diving downrigger cannon balls. Built up a decent collection.

I love the collection. I collect unusual golf balls that end up in the water from the course next door. However my favorite is finding the lost rubber ducks from the duck race the town does every year.

I’ve never found one of those ducks. Always have my eyes open for them.

There’s a fat group of reeds on my local river that are across from a popular put in on a very fishy segment. For most of the year they’re flooded, but there’s a short bit at the end of the season where the water levels drop enough that you can walk right up to them. I’ve gotten quite a few flies, indicators, and pike lures.

Pike lures are a nice find. Those suckers can be spendy
