They use deer hair to tie like mice or poppers because it’s hollow it’s called spinning hair on the hook it’s really cool to watch people that are good at it , me I’m not so good at it haha. I can tie a decent crappie jig Or musky buck tail.
With the floating part being good, dipping a large bodied jig/ large hook in punch bait it should work well for limblines barely touching the top of the water.
Here’s a tip. DEBONE the tail first. I split the deer tails from the top (brown side) it keeps all the white dyed hair together. Wash the tail well with detergent to remove any dirt, fats, oil etc. Once it’s dyed to the color and shade you want rinse it thoroughly in ice cold water.
I've used Ritz laundry dyes available in a lot of stores. I boil water in a used, dedicated for this only, stock pot. Mix in dye per instructions, drop in deer tails and stir some with tongs 'till you get desired (or close) color. Rinse and allow to dry. Works well for me. Good luck.
Did you add vinegar to your boil.
I agree with the use of Borax. Have done it for many years and it works just just. In fact a friend who is a taxidermist uses borax to treat pheasants before mounting them and the mounts last way over 25years😊
I Have mounted fish heads using borax fix the head in a pose put it in a box or a bucket cover it up with borax and forget about it for a couple months it will mummyfie wash it off let it dry then put clear varnish. I just finished up my grandson’s first musky.
Talk to someone at a salon get the clippings of hair you won't have to dye any.
Awesome mount. Thanks for sharing.
