Apparently, we learned to prepare and eat them from our Native American neighbors ! They were also mentioned as survival food (among others) back in the Scouts ! Learned to ID and pick hazelnuts as well ! Learned that they ate acorns as a staple food; was NOT told about leeching the tannin out of them first ! While trying to practice survival techniques in the woods nearby, tried eating some along with the hazelnuts and ended up in the emergency room getting my stomach pumped ! That was one lesson hard-learned and never
repeated ! --- Yes ! I miss my
seafood ! Used to get some form of seafood about once a month, and shellfish/lobster two to three times through the summer ! All
of that is very pricey out here in the desert, but am really looking forward to trying walleye for the first time this coming spring at Culver's ! It's freshwater, so not technically seafood, but still a
new experience !
