I agree Pacific NW is a good idea for a region, but dividing it into a Western and Eastern (Inland) NW would more accurately describe the fishing types available.
West of Cascades/coastal ranges include saltwater and anadromous schooling; thanks to reservoirs and natural land structures (Lower Columbia, Puget Sound and tidal waters) the predominant species are anadromous types (salmon, steelhead) and big-river natives (saltwater, sturgeon and some others).
Inland Northwest (including Idaho, Western Montana, Eastern WA & OR and northern Wyoming and parts of Utah) are almost exclusively freshwater streams or lakes, plus the Columbia and Snake River watersheds that are mostly reservoirs. Fish types include pikes, various trout/steelheads, spiny ray fishes (bass, perch, sunfishes), channel and blue catfish, and some stocked or otherwise imported species.
Although these are admittedly gross over-simplifications, one overall generalization contributing to the basic idea of "sticky" topics is that at least these two geo-regions represent two different general fishing types: bigger waters and smaller ones. There are exceptions in each case to be sure, but for discussion's sake, I propose a "West Pacific Northwest" and am "Inland Northwest". And before anybody askes, I don't have a preference for a formal name for either one.
How about using the time zones, Atlantic, Central, Pacific and north, south of each. That would give us 6 regions. This would focus the conversation closer to home while giving us some long distance advice if we would be traveling to other regions.
Admin it appears you have opened a can of fishing worms here with your question. Good luck in what ever your decision is. And thanks for the job you have been doing.

I second the motion by Plumbob. My comment would be that you have this site running so well, it isn't likely to become easier to use. Well done.
My main concern is so very much in evidence by jrsloan post. "Gross over-simplification".....whaaaat ? I saw NOTHING simplified by what you proposed,... defined... you bet... simplified ?..nooo.... complicated further, to be sure.
So if we divvy up the PNW as you propose, my day trips would require me to check out more than one site ? I'm guessing you like "committee formation" to resolve trivial.... anything.
I could go on with additional ludicrous ideas for us to ponder..... don't wanna. Just go fishing and learn about this glorious country, vicariously if necessary,... in person, hopefully.
BTW--Admin.....was this one of those "sticky topics" ? LoL...big time !
Southwest States (fresh)/Southern Pacific (salt)
Time zones makes the most sense. Make even better. Use the time zones and take I-70 across country to cut the country in half. Now you have 8 perfect fishing zones
bojo
Loc: South East South Dakota
Upper Midwest would be great......SD, ND, MN, WI
Pensacola Florida inshore that's where i fish and I am new at this #rookie #help me out
Ditto to Big Dog's reply!
