I too thought that all lead products (including in shotgun shells) were outlawed. I still have old split shot as well as sinkers my father made with his molds (he had army men molds too). Now all is banned. When I was young I had a Chemistry set complete with asbestos trivet and a jar of carbon tetrachloride!

It all depends on where you live. Every state is different. I believe steel shot for migratory birds is the only nationwide ban on lead.

The steel shot started back when I was still duck hunting, in the 1990s.

Keeps you from eating them. I had some that had ears on them so you could pinch the ears to open them to slide them up or down. Handy but they tended to snag on brush or rocks. They too were soft.

I used to like the oval shaped ones, with the slot down the middle an 2 flaps to bend down on the ends.
