Today, we mark the passage of 31 years since the February 26, 1993 bombing at the World Trade Center. That morning, 50,000 people went to work at the World Trade Center, as they did every day. Just a few hours later, a terrorist attack claimed the lives of six innocent people, injured over 1,000, and elicited an emergency response of more than 700 police, fire, and rescue personnel. Today, we will come together to mark the anniversary of that horrific day and to honor the memory of John DiGiovanni, Robert Kirkpatrick, Stephen A. Knapp, William Macko, Wilfredo Mercado, and Monica Rodriguez Smith, who was pregnant when she was killed.
As in years past, we will gather at the Memorial’s North Pool, where the names of the six victims are memorialized. We will observe a moment of silence at 12:18 p.m. ET, which marks the exact time of the bombing, and family members will read aloud the names of those who were killed. Following this reading, all in attendance are invited to pay their respects by placing roses on the Memorial panel inscribed with the victims’ names.
Today’s annual commemoration will begin at 12:15 p.m. ET, and I hope you will join us in honoring those we lost by watching the ceremony live on our website.
Every day of every year, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum shares with the world the stories of those who were killed, the courage of those who responded to the attacks, and the resilience of those who survived. Our steadfast commitment to never forget those killed, and to remember hope in the face of unthinkable tragedy, is more important than ever. You can help us reach those too young to remember by sharing our dedicated webpage about February 26, 1993 and its aftermath.
I hope you will join me today in remembering those killed and harmed by the 1993 bombing. Our deepest sympathies are with their loved ones on this difficult day.
