There's a little drainage pond in a nearby neighborhood with an absolute goliath bass in it. He's probably 4-5 lbs, which doesn't make any sense for how small the pond is. I saw him a few weeks ago chilling by the bank, and I've been hunting him ever since.
Last night I finally hooked up on him. Threw my jerkbait under an overhanging tree and he blew up on it the second it touched the water. I got him about 80% of the way in, and he suddenly broke my line. Stole a brand new rapala too, I had bought it the same day.
I was using 8 lb mono, but it's been on my reel for like 2 months of heavy use so I guess it had some weak spots. I'm feeling defeated, but in a good way. I'll be back, this time with new line

the lure/hook will end up rusting out and coming free, or he’ll spit it out at another point in time.

That’s good to hear. It’s happened to me a couple times and I’m always worried about them living their life with a hook in it’s mouth

I don't have any data to back this up, but anecdotally I think that fish are pretty good at spitting the lure within a day or two

I'm re-spooling today with 10 lb powerpro. First time using anything besides mono, I'm kind of excited. I got 10lb fluorocarbon for a leader too.

I was always told that a fish has enzymes that will dissolve a hook in 3 days.

So true and every time out I am looking for 2 top water skitter walk plugs that have been confiscated by monsters this past year. That floater is stuck in 2 different fish and eventually the good part has to surface. However, my chances are probably ZERO of ever seeing it again. But I still keep an eye out.

If it's happening frequently maybe you should double check your knots? I don't know about all of you, but I've found that since I can tie an improved uni in my sleep and with my eyes closed (been tying em for about 60 years) I sometimes get careless with that tag end. Any more I always check twice.

The reason for loss was a monster hit me 10' from the boat on the first one which had no slack to give it running room. The second loss was that I caught a needle fish the cast before and he must have nicked my leader. Next cast had the trout dangling above my kayak removed the net from under him, he falls plug in mouth flips when he hits the kayak and over he went. OUCH!!!

A fish can get rid of a hook much quicker than waiting for it to rust out. As the article says, do your own experiment: put a hook in some salt water and one in some fresh water and see how long they take to dissolve. That'll give you a pretty good idea of how long it will take to "rust out" inside a fish. But the good news is that fish can somehow shed a hook, all without arms or hands!

Or it will starve to death because it cannot catch bait fish to eat with the lure hanging out of his mouth.
