Hi I’m new to this site but it seems to be really cool.
I’m a beginner fishing guy and hope to learn something from this site. Recently I bought a cabin in Old Station Ca. It borders on Lassen National Forest . Hat Creek is literally a 5 minute jaunt from my gate. Lots of trout in the creek and I can catch my limit pretty quickly. I’m wanting to try my luck at fly fishing one day, there are several lakes close by. Baum lake especially has caught my attention. Also I’m interested in steelhead fishing on the Trinity river and Sacramento River, I’ve tried but to no avail. I’m hoping that using this site might help me become a better fisherman.

Welcome there is lots of good info here. I can say that all here will help out with questions or advice.
Well except for the Attic. LOL Gets a little warm there sometimes. But it is still all good on the site.
I'll send you a tip on the trout fishing I learned at like 18. LOL

Hint for you. when I first started to try fly fishing, I took about 30 feet of yarn and put it through the rod.
Started working the rod until I could get most of it in the air in the back yard.
Then when I used a reel with the fly line it was not a problem.
Just a hint for you. Don't remember where I read that learning tip years back. LOL

Here’s the deal I have my Grandfathers old fly rod and reel, it’s like made in the late 40s. The man at the fly shop said it would work okay, of course not nearly as good as today’s models but never the less it would get me started. I believe it is one of the first aluminum rods made. It is a Garcia Conlin.5 star.

The trick is getting the back and forth on the rod so the line is airborne before you cast it.
That is where learning with the yarn comes in. If you really just want to have fun, get some small bass Poppers, about 1/4 inch and tie them to the end of the line with some 6-8 LB mono, about a foot or so. Work the sides of a lake for Blue Gills. half the time they hit it, its not in their mouth. Just pure fun though.

Bill, don't get discouraged if you don't get it in 10 minutes, nobody does. But once you get the timing down, and are fluid and relaxed, you'll love it. And, you can put it down for years, and in a couple of false casts, you'll have it back. I learned from my Grandfather, who was a grouchy, difficult old man, but he was soooo patient with me. I was just 7 years old. Loved him even more after that. We spent some really pleasant moments doing this for many years. Just me and him. He had 14 other Grandkids, but we had something special. (Besides that beautiful bamboo fly rod). I still have it over 65 years later, it's one of my most precious possessions.

Forgot, you don't "Snap it", like Nutz says relax and start off slow and easy, once you get your back and forth smooth, let out more yarn.
