I am 71 with two artificial knees. Active and would like access the middle of ponds. Any ideas on likely hood of that.
Been looking at kayaks. I have a 16 foot Jon boat but it's to heavy to drag to some of the ponds I'd want.to fish.
Thoughts anyone?

Yes Plumbob you have seen me post about this before when I was inquiring about boats. Now that I have decided to purchase a water craft of some kind I am again inquiring about what would be the best type to purchase. Kayak fishing look like it can be so much fun and from what I hear much less maintenance. But I have recently gotten the oppertunity to fish off of a bass boat for the first time and it was amazing as well. So the issue for me is what do I want to spend my hard earned pennies on. Right now I am leaning towards the kayak but I could change my mind at the last minute! Decisions decisions

Aaron I know what you mean about decisions. My neighbor tried for nearly a year talking up kayaks. I knew he was out fishing me but thought that was because he was more experienced then me. Then one day nearly a mile from the house my 14' fiberglass broke down and I had to paddle that sucker back to the house. Normally plenty of crabbers out there and knew a few so figured I would wait it out. WRONG !!!! Gave me time to figure out how to get rid of 2 boats and get a kayak. Long story short, I now keep up with and occasionally out fish my neighbor. Your waters may be different than what I am used too and only you know the winds and tides in your ventures so best of luck in your choice. Worse case sell it and get the other.

If you get a kayak make sure you research to decide between a sit-in versus a sit-on, and one designed for fishing with places for rods/gear versus one solely for recreation.

I have been doing my research on different kayaks Steve-o. There are so many different to consider! I am really looking into Jackson kayak but I am always down for getting info on other brands. I am a big guy at 6"2, 260 lbs so I would love to find one with at least a 400 lb capacity.

there is no comparrision a good 16 'jon boat is a great all around boat you can pick up a good used one for not too much cash. kayak really don't know why anyone would by one you put so many limits on yourself in a kayak.

Hey spoon I would be interested in hearing those limits you mention. In my areas of fishing I not only have been everywhere I used to go in my 14' criss craft with a 9hp motor, but now I go where that 14' couldn't go. Personally I believe it all depends where one fishes that determines what to fish from.

Maybe you might be interested in a canoe? They are fun but more difficult to maneuver and easier to tip over. I've had all 3, over the years...and the best I could recommend is a kayak. I love a fishing boat, don't get me wrong. But they come with some added work and cost. Kayaks with fishing gear installed on it are best.

Thank you for that GrizzlyAl. I think I may just purchase a kayak. I have been doing my research, and watching videos on YouTube and they look like such a blast for fish from and like you said just get out and enjoy things in a less hectic atmosphere. I do have a pick up truck so loading and unloading would be a breeze and I also have a few trailers if I want to purchase more than one and take them places with a partner. But your insight with the boat is very helpful and mabey in the future I I may purchase a very nice bass boat, but for now I think the best route for me is a good fisherman kayak.

spoonplugger, I’d prefer a boat but with a kayak I throw it in the bed of my truck, put it in the water, fish in tight places, and truck it home and hang it in my garage. Convenience. That’s why I use a kayak. I do all this on my own. Couldn’t due this with a boat (well, with most boats)

Happy fishing!

plumbob a kayak is great if you want to fish from a kayak. But I see guys all the time trying to fish the bigger lakes from a kayak and yes they can pick a small area and make cast.but as I said thats a limitations. Also I was speaking from the bigger picture of fishing. That boat allows one to go most anywhere. big lakes small lakes rivers creeks, and I know you can put a kayak on those also. But what you cannot do on a kayak is to control your depth and speed.I myself have a 20'bass boat really love fishing from it.But I also have a open 16' boat with a 40 hp tiller .When I fish from my bass boat I put limitations on myself. My 16 tiller is by far the more versitile boat ready and able to control all aspects of depth and speed control both casting and trolling, and trust me at times you need to troll a lure up to 10mph to make a bass strike the plug. You cannot do this on a kayak or my bass boat.As far as steve-o I fish by myself most of the time it is no problem to launch or load either of my boats by myself and I donot have to ever get in the water to do so.

Hey Spoon thanks for the limitation clarification. You bring up a good point. It looks like trolling is the biggest concern, so I think we can agree it all depends on what type of fishing these folks are doing that warrants them purchasing a boat or kayak. Creeks and tight streams trolling wouldn't be a concern, lakes and ocean fishing it would be. So as you have read through numerous post it all depends on what they are after and where they fish. We give them options through whatever info they give out and the decision is all theirs. And like I mention to one gentleman yesterday, if you make a choice and you don't like it, sell and get the other.

Well said Plumbob. I’m a kayak guy cuz that’s what meets my needs for where I fish. But if you give me a $15k bass boat I’d grab it in a heartbeat and change my style of fishing.

But you are right, it’s an apple vs orange discussion. They both have their place and each is very different from the other the majority of the time.
