I used to fish Atwood a lot. Always from shore. We fished by the dam, where the park is. We caught tons of bluegill, some 1 pound largemouth and a few sizable cats. Itโs a nice area but we were limited by only shore fishing past few years. I

Jepolt: "...Where do you spend your time fishing?" Lately I fish mostly at Atwood for saugeye. Problem is one has to catch about 8 cigar size before you can catch a "keeper". But it is still a fun day anytime you are on the lake.
I've caught some real nice saugeye at that little spot across from the cemetery. People have fires there and usually trash it out on the weekends.
Is that the spot on the north east end/side of the lake?
Yes, right on 172 right when you get to the lake.
Jepolt said..."I used to fish Atwood a lot. Always from shore. We fished by the dam, where the park is." I've caught several keepers in those two areas while fishing from shore, time of year around St. Patricks Day.

Many folks have had good catches on the sunken islands nearby, but for some reason the last two years that area seems not productive. You no longer even see the pontoon boats full of people fishing what use to be known as hot spots for saugeye. I believe too much fishing pressure has hurt the lake.
Thanks Jim, thats good to know. It seems more and more people are fishing these days. There is lots of fishing pressure everywhere.

In the 60's and 70's I use to enjoy getting drinking water from the spring behind the cemetery. I wish this spring could be renovated and opened back up for public use.
There use to be a nice spring to get water and water cress on one of this small roads from Morges to Atwood, but it seems to be gone now.
Last week I had the pleasure of getting some water from the spring along the road at Salt Fork State Park area, it was delicious. I wish it was nearby.
Thats really interesting, I hadn't heard about active springs since the 60's. We always frequented the spring in Elyria It was really great tasting water.
It used to be easy to get to the spring by circling down to the water and totally around and behind the cemetery, and then up the small ravine to the spring. I tried to get back there not long ago, but it was all grown up. If you take the trail walkway on the upper side of the new parking lot, you will come to a deep ravine with a wood walkway over it. That is the remnant of the spring. I would think it could be opened back up and water flowing again. Of course there was always the obligatory frog or toad that stood guard over the spring and would jump in as soon as you approached. I think that is what made the water taste so good? :)
๐. Is Rt 172 somewhere around Atwood? Iโm told where 172 meets Atwood there is some great shore fishing. I canโt find Rt 172 near Atwood??
I think the correct route is Rt. 542, the road that goes out of Magnolia to the lake. Just as you get to the lake you'll see an old cemetery on the right with gravel parking area. Shore fishing from the weeded and brushy area below the cemetery. Also fish from the rocky shoreline either side of the bridge. The bridge concrete step down area is also a popular place for pan fish and white bass.
It's is 542... I couldn't remember the road so i looked on the map... i grew up in Waynesburg but moved years ago. Once your down at the lake alot of good spots on the side, I just suck at fishing so nothing is ever productive for me.
Thanks fishing4cats, I will get over that way and look around. I never been in that area of Atwood. ๐๐ฃ
