Using a swivel depends on the lure. Fishing the gulf coast an old salt's trick is to tie the line directly to a gold or silver spoon, with the snap ring removed (preferably a Wilson sprite quarter or half inch size). Fish the lure like you would a plastic worm. It is a killer for redfish and trout and even flounder like it as well. Of course, at the end of the day, you must strip your reel and re-spoon it with fresh line because of the old twisted line.

No swivel for me. Sometimes only a snap. Reason being never have to worry about reeling the swivel into the rod tip.
