Swivels vs no swivels
Is there a big difference between using a swivel to hook up a lure or is it better to tie directly to the line? I have heard both but wanted others opinions. If it helps I normally use a baitcaster and am a huge fan of jigs and chatter baits, also crank and jerk baits.

Aaron124,
I think it’s a wash either way using a bait caster. I have found that using a swivel with a spinning reel reduces line twist. My Dad used them with his bait caster. As best as I can remember he didn’t own a spinning reel. Way back in the day nearly everyone used them down here in the south.
That's good to know. I live in the North and we don't get to fish as much as people in the south due to the cold in the winter time. I always admire advise from fisherman from the south because they have much more oppertunity to get out and fish all year long. Thanks for the advise John D.
I live in nc been fishing all my life am now 65. I only use a snap swivel if i'm use a lure that will cause my line to twist. But I always use a snap for crankbaits and such. Some top water baits a snap will sorta kill the action. So it really depends on what your doing and if you do use them try to stay as small as you can.
I always attach a mono leader with swivel to main line. That way the swivel has no impact on lure
Aaron124 try it out yourself that way you will know what you want to go with.
Snaps or swivels are fine for quick changing lures but remember to check your line for nicks and frays

i mostly fish bass most any lake
If you can do without swivel, go swivelless less hardware for wary fish to see! Any where line might spin use one! Stop the line twist for the most part and a few other applications like weight stopper!

I've had mixed results with hardware. Fishing German Browns in New Mexico there were some days when anything visible other than a night crawler or a fly resulted in no strikes. Other days lots of flash, lures, swivels, whatever; yielded well. Fishing for Kings in Alaska, there were days when the more flashy crap and junk you hung on the end of your line, the more hits you got.
No need for a swivel with those baits. Might want to. Insider a very small snap with no swivel if you change out the lure frequently.

The only time I use a swivel is when I'm fishing on the bottom an maybe sometimes under a float with cut or some live baits. Mostly the rule (for me) the less the better.
I don't know what you are fishing for but for trout using a meps number 2 I tie direct to my line, makes a big difference as to fish caught. You will need to stop fishing and let your line untwist every one in a while, also cut the red off the shank of the hook.
This is a repeat - I connect swivel to main line, then tie on 24 inch leader to swivel, tie lure on end of leader. That way swivel is well away from lure if in fact fish are smart enough (I doubt it) to sense something fishy. It then also has no impact on lure action. As a bonus, I attached a teaser (dropper loop) midpoint on the leader. I've had occasions where the teaser catches more than the lure.
