Just returned from 5 days on the west branch of the Ausable river with 3 of my close fishing buddies. A spectacular trip and the the only thing biting more than the trout were the black flies!
We fished in and around the Whiteface Mountain ski area (Alpine events were held there during the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid). Very steep & vertical drops - the locals call it “Iceface Mountain” in the winter.
We caught them on various flys (nymphs, emergers & drys during the late afternoon & evening hatches), all browns between 12-17 inches with the natives having more spectacular colors than the stockies! One of my buddies spin-fished and also had some success.
Water levels were low <300 CFS and clear, so stealthy presentations were a must.
To my surprise, the Canadian wildfires’ smoke wasn’t as bad as back here in Jersey/NYC areas - it was hazy but not choking.
Even though the phone photos don’t do them justice, here are a few pictures from the trip north, enjoy.

WOW! Fabulous trip there Steelhead Mickey! That river looks pretty swift, and I would imagine that the fish could use that to their advantage! Nice looking scenery too! Glad you guys could make it happen!
Nice photos of what must have been a great trip. Camped in that area as a kid with my family. Beautiful country
