Hey all, newbie from NE. Kansas here. What's the best way to put new line on an open faced reel spool at the same time avoiding line twist?

Mattinthehat,
Do as charlykilo advises. Rule of thumb is put spool on a clean flat place & laying flat. Reel about 1/4 of the amount that you want on your reel then flip the spool of line on the other side & reel a another 1/4 & so on. I also use line butter occasionally.

Neither Stren nor Trilene seem to work for me. I wonder if braided would do better...

What are you fishin for?How big is reel?Trilene xl(extra limp)in the mono line is by far the best mono in my opinion.but there are plenty of fine lines to choose from.

Sounds like you are talking about a spinning reel. I recommend braid but if you are using monofiliment or fluorocarbon, after spooling the line onto the reel, take the spool off the reel (usually a button to push to release the spool or turn the drag counter clockwise to loosen and release the spool). Let it soak in warm water for 15-20 minutes. Works for me.

Make sure you spool it on in the correct direction of the new spool. I purchased a Berkeley line holder for both bait casters and spinning reel to get the right tension and right direction of the line to prevent and line twist

I usually just use a pencil to hold the new spool between my knees, applying a little pressure to keep tension on the line. After a few turns I check the coils and if they appear to be getting tighter, flip the spool over. Continue with the process and it should do the job. Be aware of the pressure it can create heat to your knee. Don't be in a hurry.

I use the bottom half if the rod . I hold the line right below the first eye and reel it on. I have my kid hold the spool with a pencil. She knows just what to do

Some bad information is above. First spooling method depends on type of line. See manufacturers website. They know best for their products. Use braid, it is best. Mono is 90 or so year old technology and inferior In every way I can think of.

Well a couple of uses for mono would be for backing! Haha that’s about all! Actually on certain lure set ups, a millisecond of stretch and you have less chance of ripping the lure out of their mouths...So the pro’s say. The problem with braid, is that you would have to tie a fluro leader constantly. As a shore guy, unbreakable snags are more often shinny gifts for the Lake Gods around here! I call them “underwater Christmas trees”.

I know the post is about line twist...Just saw the mono comment, felt like chiming in. Like I mentioned, I use mono back on both spinner n baitcaster reels, with a fluro main. I’ll condition the line w/ KVD line conditioner, great stuff!! Typical rule of thumb for spooling a spinning reel, feed the line from the bottom, bait caster from the top.
