Anyone have any experience and suggestions for trout fishing in the Blue Ridge Mountain streams between Harrisonburg and Roanoke?
Heading south next week to visit a recent Jersey transplant to fly fish with a couple fishing buddies. Looking forward to getting out & exploring new streams.
Thanks for you help!

Don't know ow anything about the area, but if it were me I would just stick with standards that you are used to using.

Thanks Flytier - we plan on stopping at Mossy Creek Fly Shop on the way and get a couple dozen of the local flys hatching & hopefully some good info and advice.

I took a box of .y flies with me when I went to Colorado last summer. Took it in the fly shop, the guy took one look and filled in one that he felt would be helpful. Hares ear, pheasant tail, caddis, a couple of mayfly patterns. Don't try to cover everything. I do a lot of damage with a wooly bugger and a Wulff

Thanks - great idea! I’ll bring my 4 wt & a couple of boxes of my nj nymphs and will supplement with the fly shops suggestions. They have a $40 box with a dozen seasonal trout patterns. If I purchase it I’ll make sure I get $80 of free local info too!
Always have a few different colors and sizes of woolly buggers with me always too - it’s a great confidence fly on a tough day.

Haven’t had that opportunity yet but will give it a try on my smallmouth spots on the Delaware this season.

What colors/sizes and rigging methods do you suggest?
Thanks!

I justcrugvthem like any other streamer fly. Tie the tails on the full side in pink black and orange crystal chenille. Another favorite is a stimulator in orange and yellow, and a muddler Minnow .

Where are you in NJ, north, south or central

North west jersey, approximately 30 miles east of Delaware water gap & 40 miles west of NYC.

Harry or Jeff Murray at Murray's Fly Shop in Edinburgh, VA is a very good place for information on locations and matching the current hatch. Experts in the Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge brook trout streams.

Virginia Trout fishing is too diverse for a short term review. Contact the virginia Dept. of Wildlife resources. There is a publication called "Freshwater Fishing in Virginia" which can helpbut there is also a lot of study that you will need for a game plan. Check out Rose River Farm and Douthat Lake but that is just two of many choices.

Hey there.
I just read your post. I live in Roanoke and have done a bit of river and stream trout fishing in the area. I haven't been fly fishing for them, but do fish for them with light tackle spinning gear. I personally use spinners for them.
There are many streams and rivers that you can target trout in Virginia. I recommend you use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nicusa.huntfishva to search the local spots to fish for trout. They will post the places where and when they stock.
Keep in mind that some places will be delayed harvest, which means that you must release all trout caught and their are put and take spots where you can keep your catch.
If you want you can private message me and we could plan a day to go out and I'll try to get you on some trout.
