P.S ocean perch,are not stocked, don't need a boat, just a medium action rod.
In the surf I'll get in about knee deep or better,bare foot, in shorts,it's a little trouble but worth it.

Just as in the name of my favorite magazine, "Salmon Trout Steelhead", for the most part....anything BUT bass !
Caught thousands of bass, mostly in farm ponds and various midwestern reservoirs, in my first 30 years....plenty enough to last my lifetime. I now only target EDIBLE fish...including surf perch. I am "angling" to expand my ocean fishing this year, for sure. Need to go catch some lings and rock fish....such tasty stuff.

we get it fresh from a few places in Corvallis.one on second and one place going out of town toward Philomath.
And I'll have to say,it's a whole lot cheaper than fishing for them.
Just caught Yellow barred perch are my favorite, deep fried.

I have never fished the Oregon coast but am so looking forward to it.
Cresent city's as far north as I have fish them and assuming all things are equal, if not a lot rougher.Either way I usually will tie a Texas type slider with beads.Depending on conditions 3-4 ft.leader.

Big rods are for those who sit and never move.
And pier fishing is a nice way to relax.
Surf fishing kills fishermen.
A steel head rod can do the trick. Spinning.
Usually the fish will be feeding where the back wash water and the waves will meet,
A wave rolls over the back wash, and like a washing machine, stirs it up,and is ever changing as is the tide.
Perch fish are feeding there, usually.
Best time I could say,is any time you can. but the truth is, when you feel the native bait is there and is being eaten by perch,or any fish,(I have caught stripper,Halibut,and a variety of Perch).
Being there, finding the best spot,and being ready well before the incoming tide,is key.
Finding bait can be an issue, moving to pick up bait, and finding bait. there's where you find the fish.
A small container with lid to hold your bait on a belt clip helps you bait up when getting into a school.
Some surf fishers like to use a small crappie type rubber worm jig. And they are always in my pack, too.

weight can be an egg slider with barrel swivels and beads. -------------------------12lb, test and 6-8 leader.
also they make a flat one that holds the bottom better.
If you bait the hook to keep it alive they can dig back into the sand, and some times feel like some things there.
so keep it moving, but pay it out when its moving in the right direction,a little like sailing into the wind.again you don't need much weight,1 oz.less is better.the fish are in a trough waiting to ambush a sand crab, following the tide. in fairly shallow water.cast past it and fall in.
And again the ocean is full of things that want to eat you,not to mention the overwhelming forces a big tide can create. Be safe

When you get caught with no License you will wish you had one. Fish and Wildlife nationally are why there is any fish left. Making sure Recreational and Commercial Fishing exists is part of what the licenses pay for. State Marine Board in Oregon is who builds and maintains boat ramps with Boat Registration fees (NOT GENERAL FUND) by the way. Thinking just because the main target fish your aftrer are not from a hatchery doesn't change the legality of not getting a license. When a Law Enforcement Agent takes your car and fishing equipment you will realize a license costed a bunch less.

sounds good.
bring you a wire screen of 1/4 inch mesh to find the best crab...SOFT SHELL sand crab is the best bait,but not always easy.
