Well guys. I've been climbing around in my Apple tree all afternoon pruning it for the last time.
Sure gonna miss that tree BUT not pruning it.
The tree is taller than the house and probly close to 20 feet across.
It is a lot of work but I didn't do it last year so it really had to be done this year.
We should have a very good crop of apples this year, but with the move to Tahoe I won't be able to keep up with pickin them and givin them away.
Might not even be here cause they are a late season apple. They don't get ripe till July or August.
In the good years we probly give away 40 five gal buckets of apples and we throw away at least the same amount or more.
They are Gravenstein apples which are a short stemmed apple. They grow in clusters up to 5 or so. Then when they start getting to big it pushes some off so we get a lot off the ground.
Then later when they start to get ripe they start fallin off and a lot more get thrown away.
If they aren't too damaged they still make GREAT pies and apple sauce/butter though.
It's the ONLY apples I eat. If they aren't off my tree I don't care for them.
Sure wish more of y'all lived closer so you could enjoy them.
If you refrigerate them right when you pick them they will keep for MONTHS. If you leave them out on the table/counter they will start to get mealy within a few days to a week.
I'm bout as sore as you can get. I'm hurtin all over. I might be getting to old to be climbin around the trees for HOURS and workin a pair of loppers or hand shears. But like I said, this is the last time I'll have to do any pruning HERE.

You just need to figure out how to make a Apple muscle relaxer
And then stay out of the trees
Oh I was just told itโ€™s called a Apple martini ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿธ

apple juice and rum would probably be great. Pruning is good for the tree and fruit quality but I agree its spooky and dangerous. what other trees are near there so it pollinates? It probably has another apple tree of different type within 100 or so feet. Apples need different type to pollinate. Many trees are graphed with seveeral types on one trunk just for the pollination thing.

Saw never had that variety at the orchard. We did have big old trees like that when I first went there. Now most of them plant drawf trees. No longer need 24' rung ladders to pick them. Did alot of trimming in my 9 yr stay. Everyone I knew that had fruit trees wanted me to trim em for them. Next time rent a man lift n a small pole saw. Much safer brother

know what you mean my older trees are simi- dwarfs when I planted them I was young and a 12-15' trees didn't sound to bad but as I got older I have switched to dwarfs 8-10' seems tall enough and still end up with lots of fruit although I had to fence in my trees since the deer also like shorter trees

Not TOO bad. Still a little sore but nothing like last night.
This is the time of year to prune them. While they're dormant.
All this rain we've had and now the next 2 weeks or more of sunshine and good weather EVERYTHING is gonna start growin and comin back to life.

Happy to hear youโ€™re OUT of the tree. A younger friend of mine fell out of his apple tree and ended up paralyzed. Iโ€™ve done my own work around the place all of my life but Iโ€™m starting to realize at 72 I have to be careful. I recently hired a younger guy to help me with a roof. He went up, I mostly stayed down. It got done.

Hello Saw. I'm not looking forward to it but I've got 18 fruit trees to trim up starting this weekend. I didn't get them trimmed last year so the're pretty wooley right now. I've bought some carbide toothed Sawzall blades just for pruning & using my battery powered Sawzall the job should be easier. Cutting the limbs has never been the issue, it's all that bending & stooping to pick up the limbs that bothers me. Good luck on your move Steve.
