It looks like catch & release is the way to go if you’re fishing in fresh water.

F4F,
The Great Lakes have had fish consumption warning for decades.. I used to eat walleye, perch and occasional trout out of the Detroit river and Lake Erie. I stopped fishing for walleye after many years for a lot of reasons, tired of catching walleye, work, family. I still fished the Great Lakes but targeted steelhead, then bass more and more. I enjoyed the hunt and the fight more than eating them. My wife and I retired and moved away from Detroit river and Lake Erie, now I fish Lake Huron and the big inland lakes of Northern Michigan for fun.
I target smallmouth bass mostly, and I have never considered them table fare..I catch an occasional walleye.. but have only kept a couple in the last 10 years or so.
It is just a sad situation that we are ingesting these compounds.and who knows what it does to our bodies..
Don’t really know what my point is… but just puts a damper on the fabulous fishing we have in the Great Lakes and other fresh water systems.

We have had fish consumption advisories for years, as a result of manufacturing wastes mostly from the past. PCBs, Lead, Mercury, PFAs, and Chlordane, are the most prevalent in Freshwater and Saltwater fish out here.

Jersey consumption/restrictions have been around for a while for freshwater fish as well as SW (bluefish). PCB's & heavy metals are the concern. Hatchery-raised, stocked trout are not in the streams long enough (IMO) to absorb the toxins.
Common sense, moderation & conservation are always good things & CPR is what I follow mostly. Then again, some fresh crappie & yellow perch through the ice or from deep, cold water taste yummy!

A bit of metallic and chem flavoring just what many love. Some mercury. Some PCB's for extra flavor. I understand the theory that if they are not in there very long they are not effected. Hatchery Trout in polluted water in Oregon absorb it but that is NOT my opinion it is a scientific fact. So if someone chuggs poison instead of sipping it slowly will it effect them? I would avoid eating animals and fish that are in or drink a known contaminated water source but then again I saw the studies first hand in a Laboratory fellow employees worked in.

If one's brain cells get shorted out from Mercury and other perception is distorted from consuming the poisons I guess they will never understand what the warnings are for.

Hey Jeremy, thanks for your concern & "glowing" dietary opinions on Oregonian wildlife consumption.

NJ trout fishing is primarily a put & take fishery. If I were to keep one for the campfire frying pan, I'd enjoy it without any worry about how it AFFECTS me long-term. Mickey survived 2 terrorist attacks at work (North Tower, #1 WTC) in '93 & '01 and will not lose any sleep over a stocked trout's couple of days/weeks of possible stream absorption.

FYI - the trout streams I fish in the NW part of the state are beautiful & surprisingly pristine. They do not resemble Newark Bay, which, unfortunately, some non-Jersey folk think of when they voice their suppositions about the Garden State wildlife.
So Jeremy, next time you are in the NJ area, I'd love to take you out on a fishing adventure "Jersey-style" - we can hit places like Ken Lockwood Gorge, The Big Flatbrook, or Van Campen's Glen - it may enlighten & change some opinions on NJ streams.

I love fishing and the outdoors. I am sure it is beautiful away from big city. I know contaminated water areas are not visibly polluted in every instance. I could get there someday but not on my short term bucket list. I may bug you someday to go but probably not in 23. It is a free country health warnings are just that.

Umpf ? Looks like nothing is safe to eat. The food from the grocery store is contaminated with all kinds of additives and who knows what all.

Eating fish that are stocked on an irregular basis is fine. I understand that drinking alcoholic beverages destroys more brain cells than eating sticked fish.

I might have believed their findings if they hadn’t said all fresh water fish.

All of them. Except for bass. Very very very bad. You’ll gain weight and lose all your hair. Immediately release, record all Lat/Lon info on fish over 5 lbs, and send info directly to me 😉
