I just met a fine young man while enjoying a nice Baileys and coffee at my local tavern. We had great conversation He told me that he was looking to volunteer for work in the education field to help with his Résumé I felt that he was very sincere. I told him that my daughter is a director for Catholic charities in our area and that they are always looking for volunteers. I put him in contact with her. Hopefully it will work out, when we were about to depart we shook hands. He told me that he liked the strength in my handshake and it told him that I was sincere. I told him that my dad told me along time ago that if you shake a woman’s hand pretend that it’s your mothers hand. If you shake a man’s hand, shake it like he’s your best friend. !!!!

I always tell when I shake another man's hand if it's a firm meaningful glad to see you or like a cold fish hand shake letting you know they don't like you. I've been involved in ministry for year's, brothers of the Church usually pump your hand like a well pump handle. The women tend to give the motherly shake and a hug all in the Christian way!

In my early days running a business I and the customers come to a monetary agreement with a handshake $$$$ and both stuck to the agreement. Later on especially dealing with business managers and little night club owners and stuff started trying to pull fast ones, trying do weasel out of what your agreed price is for the work. Then I had to start writing a legal contract binding both to the work to be done for the money to be paid to my company. So things have definitely changed from where they used to be.

I am in full agreement. It's to bad our parents could not give advice regarding a sincere elbow bump.

I taught my son that, and to look them in the eyes while doing the handshake. He’s in his 30s and still does that. 🌴😎🌴

I always look a person in the eye when shaking their hand. I never gave it much thought. I expect it was one of those things that was taught to me along with the strong hand shake by my dad and I just forgot the lesson. Thanks dad, long passed. I also address nearly everyone as Sir. Another lesson from my army dependent years that stuck. A good respectful lesson to this date.

I have a good friend George L .He is a 95 year old ww2 vet. He has been my barber for about 10 years. I am his only and last customer. I have always had a good and strong handshake. I would greet him with a shake. One day as we were about to shake hands he was hesitant about the handshake. I asked him what’s wrong. He said it hurts his hand a lot when I shake. So give a little thought when shaking someone’s hand. A strong handshake for some may be too much for others. We go to lunch and breakfast a lot. He wears his WW2 veteran hat most of the time. More often than not someone will come over and thank him for his service and buy our meal and shake his hand.I figure he has shaken a lot of hands in his 95 years. Bobby

It is easy to confuse a strong handshake with a firm deliberate handshake. A strong handshake is based on strength. A firm deliberate handshake can be very soft but still convey sincerity. You will usually know the difference when you shake a hand. Body posture, eye contact, conversation and more all make up part of a sincere handshake, a committed handshake, a greeting handshake as well as more, such as an aggressive or threatening handshake. Though you may not intend to, nearly every gesture as well as spoken and unspoken word, look, and breathing will convey a message to a trained person and in many cases an untrained person. If you want to shake a hand, extend your hand out and crasp with a deliberate grip. The firmness of that grip will be adjusted based on the respect you have for the person you are shaking hands with. Note: this all applies equally to a hug.
