Ah Fred.... there you go with that new fangled common sense thinking!

If my feeble mind doesn't fail me, I recall my old Eagle fishfinders would revert to standard settings every time you turned them back on. Any zoom, sensitivity, contrast, surface clutter, or other fine tuning settings were lost when you shut it off. I would think that the brightness settings would be easy to add to the start-up program. But that's just me.

You are 100% correct, it is very easy and very common in today's software driven equipment to have default "start" or "power on" settings. In fact, it is often used as a reset when operators get their settings so out of whack the machine won't operate properly or when the software has a glitch causing problems. You've probably done it hundreds of times and is commonly referred to as a "reboot." I'm thinking the fish finder industry doesn't use it because they think they are saving anglers from the time and frustration of having to input their adjustments everytime the unit is powered off/on. Two options are common and would be an improvement. One method is to break up settings into two groups. One group would reboot to a default value and the other group would not (eg: screen intensity in the reboot group and pallete selection or intensity settings in the other). I use KISS when I write programs and am thinking when the unit is powered down I would prompt the operator:
"Power Off and Save Current Settings? Select NO to Return Settings to Their Default Value."
YES
NO
This makes the operator " large and in charge. "

I think all of my settings and screen choices remain as I left them, when I start mine. That's fine with me, as I can change what I want in a few seconds. The brightness though, is a different story.since the menus are all on screen, I need to SEE the screen in order to log in, and change settings, so it should return to default level at startup. JMHO.

You are absolutel6 correct and there are probably a couple more settings that should do the same. How hard would it be? Right there when you power on and see the Garmin, Lowrance, or any other manufacturers screen every time, the screen brightness gets set so you can see the damn screen. First manufacturer to get feedback from you Fred would have an immediate competitive advantage!

We can't be the only people that might fish day AND night. You would think that they've heard about this issue before. Back in the day, the LCD screens only had a back light, for night use. It didn't matter if it was off or on during the day. They've been using LEDs for 20yrs now, so you'd think that they would have fixed it by now.
