Fred,
There's a lot I don't (and probably won't ever) know about my units, but the first time I powered one up after dimming the screen, I thought my unit was bad because I couldn't see any display at all... Lesson learned is all I can say.... I'm going to put this out there for all the guys (and gals), there's some things about this night fishing that I have learned over the years (and I know Mike has as well) that we don't even think about now, but if someone has a question, we may have already found a solution or work around and there's no need to re-invent the wheel... With that being said, someone else may have found a neat trick that we may want to look at as well... Everyone has their own way of looking at things, and a different set of eyes can often see a better solution... I'm always willing to help where I can, and if someone can improve on something in a discussion I'm involved in, jump in, we may all benefit from it... There's a wealth of knowledge on this forum, and I for one like to see people helping others solve problems or give tips to make our sport more enjoyable....

Fred, br There's a lot I don't (and probably won't... (show quote)

I'm with you on the shared knowledge Doc. I also will probably never learn everything about mine. Yes I have also forgot to reset mine at the end of the night, and the next time out, thought it was toast. I went as far as online troubleshooting, before I remember that I had it dimmed down all the way, LOL. DUH!

Fred,
If you're anything like me, you felt pretty dumb when you figured out what was wrong, I'll bet, (I know I did)... I fished all day without my sonar unit, because I thought it was bad, got back home and turned it on in the garage and instantly saw the problem...Like you said, DUH! But like I said, lesson learned, I'll never forget that one...

Absolutely Doc. I was a little luckier on the discovery though. I was home, with the boat in the yard. I tried to turn it on to check the chart from the previous night's trip. I wanted to see the trail of what ground I had covered. It was about 2 pm, and the boat was in the sun. After troubleshooting online I went back outside and tried it again. By that time the boat was in the shadow of the house, and I could faintly see the intro screen. DDDUUUUUHHHHH! This is the first time I've told anyone about it.

I'm with you Doc, First time I powered my unit in the daytime after fishing at night I thought my unit was dead too. It took me several minutes to figure out I had dimmed the screen the night before. power, down arrow one then right arrow till I could see it again and man it makes a difference. My Garmin unit has an auto dim on it and dims or brightens automatically depending on ambient light, that's nice not to have to worry about.

I am also guilty of the dimmed screen scenario only mine was done by accident. I thought my unit died so I went out and bought a newer and bigger unit. Maybe a year later I plugged it in at night and DUH! Next trip I had one at the console and one on the bow... for free! LOL

Yea Hummingbird should have a warning on theirs. Turn the brightness back up before daylight, but hay I'd probably forget the warning.

Or just make them all revert to standard, daytime levels at startup.

That would be the best bet for people like me who can't remember squat, otherwise known as CRS
