Hi Kerry.
If you read the way the surf is breaking, it indicates a trough or bar on the bottom. Just like creek channels, or humps in freshwater, fish hang around there to ambush baitfish. When the waves break in a smooth line, it indicates a flat, featureless bottom. Successful Surf fishermen try to learn the bottom contours to improve their success.

Thanks, really appreciate it!

We used to take scouting walks at low tide also, and form a mental picture of any anomalies on the bottom. It's just like freshwater, fish relate to anything different on the bottom.

That's really smart and proactive. Best way to catch more fish is learn their habitat so you know where they hang out.

I learned that from one of the greatest Surf Fishermen in our area, the late editor of the New England Fisherman magazine, Tim Coleman.

Well brother, that's a good lesson to learn.
Before you can catch em ya gotta find em. It helps to KNOW where they live. Unfortunately, sometimes they're not home.

School fish definitely do, but Timmy was more of a loner specialist. Always looking for the big girls that don't follow the crowd.

Pretty pics. Glad you were able to get out for a little bit. Do people ever fish off that beach? Looks like it might be a good surf perch beach.

Yes they do.
Surf perch, corbina, and halibut at times.
Both bait and lures.

I think that was one of his 50+ pounders Butch. Back in the day that was all the Bass Fisherman's holy grail, breaking the 50lb mark. It probably still is, but you can't keep them any more.
