This is paraphrased from Paul Harvey’s Rest of the Story. In August of 1905 Ole and Bess and another couple went on a picnic to a lake west of Milwaukee. While there Bess stated that she would like some ice cream. In an effort to impress Ole got into the boat rowed a mile across the lake to get his lady her ice cream. Upon his return they found that the ice cream had turned to soup in the August heat cuz Ole couldn’t row fast enough. When they discovered the melted ice cream Bess and company started laughing uncontrollably much to Ole’s embarrassment. Later that year Ole and Bess were married. Ole never forgot his summer embarrassment and the next year he came up with an invention that would change the sporting world forever. Ole’s last name?? EVINRUDE and in 1906 the outboard motor was born!!

Good morning, Wulffy. That is a very good story, but I had heard that Ole was from a lake area in Northern WI. and Bess lived across the lake from him. So, in order to save time when they were courting, Ole developed an outboard motor. Someone on here must know the whole truth. You can't look it up on the internet. Let's hear what you have to say.

The history of Evinrude as told by Paul Harvey was true! The picnic took place on Okauchee Lake (about 30 miles W of Milwaukee). Ole was a machinist and invented the first outboard motor in 1905. Bess married Ole anyway and kept the books and was in charge of Evinrude marketing until her health failed.

And where did you find all of that info, John? "The internet knows all" It is an interesting story, I would suggest that you look it up if you have nothing better to do. It's a good short read.

Not sure which source the Google folks led me too, but I went with the first one about the history of Evinrude. Necessity truly IS the Mother of Invention!
