. I like it. Can drop an Elk at quite a distance. Custom Loads work really well.

We were hunting unit 211 in the triangle area northwest of the Colowyo coal mine. Lots easier access than above Vega. He was shooting his 7mm mag. Don't know yardage as they were running. He used my motto. Shoot until he stops moving.lol we were able to drag him about ten yards to a two-track road. While son and I were field dressing our buddy went back to camp and got the 4 wheeler trailer behind his side by side and dragged him on. Took 3 hours to dress him out laying on the ground bent over. 6 game bags of quarters and trimmings. Still, no packing out. Great hunt!

Lucky location....where he shot him. Sounds like fun. Good you had extra buddy and a few to keep an eye out for Cougar etc. Making me hungry. That Elk would be so good slightly pan fried on butter or olive oil with 3 over medium chicken eggs with this cup of coffee in my hand.

Thanks, you've got me thinking......how many preference points to get a license? I have a 30-338 magnum that I handload for; a 180 gr bullet is going 3210 average and a 3/4" group @ 100 yards, good elk medicine.

Yes, it seems like the good Lord gave them a calendar so they know when to go to private land where it's safer.

Nozler I am really happy with any store bought Remington, Federal or custom I use. Stainless Ruger American 7mag. Leupold with automatic lens covers. Lifetime Warranty on everything. Very Accurate at 100-800 yards. I wouldn't hesitate shooting deer or elk at 1000 yards. .3006" drops pretty far at 500. Same with 7x57

1,000 yard shot on deer or elk, not me kept all my shooting about 350 yards max and kill most of my deer at or below 100 yds.

GMU 211 we both drew buck mule deer and cow elk tags with no preference points. OTC bull tags. To get an antelope tag took my son 12 years preference points. Doe tags are very limited right now for game management purposes. Hated not filling our other tags but at 52 and 78 we were both whipped after processing one large animal. For those not familiar with this area it is high desert wintering area. Not a tree in sight so all skinning and boning is done on the ground unless you bring an A-frame capable of hoisting an 800 lb animal. Needless to say we were very happy to check off a bucket list item, put meat in the freezer, nothing broke, no one got hurt. A successful hunt in my book. The Lord blessed us!

Yes skinning and boning a Elk on open ground is nothing but work. Glad you and your son had a great hunt and time together now sit back and enjoy the harvest.

Most of our shots are 100-400 yards if possible especially on a moving target. I shoot Remington 700 in .270 cal and have killed dozens of deer and elk through the years. Son loves his 7mm mag Bergara but it's a little heavy at my age and the condition of my shoulders. Any ethical humane shot for a clean kill is a good shot.

My 30-338 is a Shilen barrel on a Remington 700 gun,,,,does the job!!!!I'd try to keep shots 400 yards or less.
