Just watchin Gordon's "More Nature 56" post when it dawned on me. DUH !
The PERFECT way to find GOOD places to fish would be to use a drone.
Specially if you wanted to surf fish. It would show you exactly where the rocks, drop-offs and such are.
You could also use it on any clearer lakes to show you the same things.
You wouldn't have to drive and walk for hours and miles tryin to find such places the old fashioned way.
Don't know why I just thought of it now. I've always liked watchin drone footage. Just never thought of bein able to fly it over new water so you could get a birds eye view of where the best place to fish an area would be.
It could also possibly show you schools of fish or even a few bigger fish swimming in certain areas.
Might just have to get me one of them. Might improve my fish catchin and not just fishin.

Sorry, Steve. I think that might be illegal, in most states anyway. Trust me, they have been using drones many times before, especially by charter boat operators. As I understand it, (????) in most states, you may use one before you go out, but not while you are on the water/pier/beech fishing. It would be hard to prove that you are using it to aid your fishing, fear chase, when you may be just checking out the chop. I have checked with charter boat operators on the TX. Gulf Coast and this is what they tell me. They work great for fishing red and black drums or for any fish that resides in shallow water. What the 6 man charter boat operators do, is fly their drones over their hot spots, record them on their phones, and then go fishing. I guess it is as simple as that. You be the judge. Thoughts, anyone?

Just a thought from this end. The noise may bother other fishermen out for some peace and quiet. I know I don't enjoy hearing them buzzing around. Maybe you could find a STEALTH drone. That would be cool!!

That's more what I was thinkin. Fly it all over the area where you'd like to fish and get the lay of the land/water. Then you'd know where you would want to go fishin in the future. The terrain isn't goin to change. If it is good fish holdin waters it will be the same tomorrow or next month.

Other than the noise of a drone, and can't see various depths not much different than a fish finder.

Well I'm talkin bout getting an overhead view of the water. Specially along the coast/beach for surf fishin. That way you can know where the under water rocks are and holes/depressions are that would hold fish.
Or a lake where there might be a shelf with a dropoff that you could go check out with your boat and fish finder.

That may be legal in International waters, IDK. It would be hard to catch them doing that but they do have helicopters and spotter planes that would radio the CG.

The Harpoon boats use spotter planes, I've seen them on TV. What's the difference between that and a drone, except a drone is safer and cheaper. As long as you're not flying it in restricted airspace.

If you could have an infrared (?) lens that could show depth by heat reflection, might be helpful.

Out west here, our lakes dry up so much during the summer, these past few years, we just go take pics of the dried up arms/coves and flats/channels about this time of year. Next spring you pull up the pics and head your boat that way.

Sad, but true......we have reservoirs that are (and have been) @ single digits of their capacity, long ramps ending 40' from the water's edge..........and the fall rains and eventual snowfall that hopefully refill that water, are 2-3 months away.

I use ‘Google Earth’ for both hunting and fishing. I’ve found some amazing spots no one goes to!
