My new, favorite lure is pictured. Caught some nice lmb the last couple of mornings. Today I had another one on, probably 1.5 lbs, got it near the boat and thought, ah, I don't need the net, I'll lip it. Wrong!
Just as I stuck my thumb on his lip, he jumped. Those are very sharp hooks on that little lure. So there I was, a tail hook in my little finger, and a bass going wild. Figured, unhook the fish and then me. Had crimped the barbs, so this should be easy, not. The cartilage on the bass lip would not give, I had to cut it to release the hook.
Now for me, same story, couldn't pull the hook out, couldn't cut the skin with my braid scissors. So, shove the hook all the way through the skin so I could cut the hook. By that time the boat looked like a butcher shop, just a little bit of blood.
The worst part was, I had to quit fishin' .

Well Fireguy, you survived to tell the tale, that's always a good start. Judging by the photo of your Rapala, you need to squeeze those barbs down a little more. I can still see them in the picture. Due to daily doses of blood thinner, I don't lip any fish on a multiple hook lure. I do boatflip smaller fish and net the rest. Thanks for sharing, and be Careful out there.

You got that right Fred, barbs are gonna get some attention. And, back to using the net.
As you well know Fireguy, those hooks are sharp for a purpose. Let a bass get pissed and use them as weapons and the rest is not pretty. Hopefully no infections and you can still hold the rod and reel.

Feel for you Fireguy. That happened to me once (knock on wood) where the lure snapped back at me on a hard, but failed hookset and one of the hooks on a treble lodged in the fleshy upper part of my ear. Point was imbedded past the barb so I had my son clip it close to the shank while he worked the remaining hook point through. He suggested keeping the hole open and he would pick out a nice ear ring for it. 🤕👂

Sorry to hear of your pain, Fireguy... Net, gaff-hook, axe handle, 2×lb. ball-peen hammer... ¿A pair of "Black Jack Oyster-shuckin' gloves"? God Bless America! A smallish to medium sized "Vice-Grip Welders Clamp" might make a good addition to many a tackle box!
Ouch…lesson learned
Hope it heals quickly, without issues!
I knew I'd get some good advice, stories, and comments regarding my post.
Love this page!
I feel your pain, quite literally. Of we haven't done it already, it's likely that we will.

Yup, not the 1st time for me. Fly fishing was always an adventure when the wind was blowing. Began wearing a cowboy hat to help ward off the wayward cast.

I did exactly the same thing. One night when I first started fly fishing I had a kast of wind hit me and I ended up with a #14 Adam's buried in my face. Came out easy enough but that's when I started wearing my first cowboy hat. Got my second fishing Montana and just got my third on a trip to Colorado. Sunglasses too.

I had a similar thing happen last year. However mine was with a feisty bluegill. I had to cut the treble hook and push thru. My wife wanted to go to the emergency room. We did it on the bank put on a band aide and continued fishing

Dang you Fireguy, you just sent my memory back 6 years ago. Striper twist and turn and a hook like you show went through ringer finger on right hand and came out just forward of the nail.
Released the striper 1st than being right handed, pulling it trough with my left hand was not an easy task.
Used my snot rag for a bandaid and paddled back home oh maybe a 1/2 mile leaving droplets of blood with each stroke. Thankfully no sharks.
