DCGravity was talking in a post the other day about the decline of the monarch Butterfly. It has declined 85% in the past years. He indicated that it was possibly due to the use of weed spray on the milkweed plant. Not only does it kill the plant but possibly the butterfly when it lites on it to lay the eggs. I did some research on the internet and it said that if you mix 1 gallon of white vinegar with a cup of table salt and a tablespoon full of dish soap, it would kill all weeds and grasses. I'm going to try it, have any of you ever tried it?

I’ve poured straight, white, vinegar on broadleaf weeds and it worked pretty good at getting rid of them.

I have never heard about the vinegar formula killing weeds, but would be interested in your results after you have applied it.

I have actually used and proven that varsol, a solvent, will kill Johnson grass. First, mow the area to be treated, then apply with a sprayer the stumps of the Johnson grass with varsol. This killed probably 90 to 95% of all the grass. One more treatment and all, 100% was killed. Now what affect this would have on butterflys I cannot predict. It might be too harmful. Just Sayin...RJS

Vinegar as a safe weed killer??? Nobody said it was safe for the butterflies? That was the issue.

Wasn't me, Flyguy, but I do remember reading the post. Maybe it was PNW DC? That said, I have noticed the steadily declining numbers of not just monarchs but all butterflies in general over the past few years. Gonna have to research the weed killer alternatives. Still have a jug of Round Up sitting in the shed collecting dust and cobwebs which I haven't touched in almost 10 yrs. but have given its proper disposal low priority.

I picked up 3 gallons and I'm going to try it tomorrow. It's probably cheaper than the weed killer. I let you know how it works. It may take a while.

Sorry, DCG, I thought it was you. Hopefully, no harm was done. That wasn't the only mistake I made today, they were many, so what's new?

No harm, no foul flyguy! I'm honored and quite flattered that a respected founding father of the Stage even recognizes my handle! I really do want to dispose of that jug of Roundup but I'm always too cheap to pay the disposal fee at the town dump. I'll have to give the straight vinegar a try. Little skeptical about salt getting in the soil though.

YES - it does work, although not as effective as Round Up

I agree. I use it regularly. Better for the environment but not as effective as commercial weed killer.

I use it a lot as I am on a well and don’t want Roundup in my drinking water. I have found that mixing regular white vinegar with a stronger (30%) version in a 50/50 ratio works much better. You can buy the stronger stuff at Home Depot for around $20 per gallon. The regular strength I buy at Costco for about $3 per gallon. I don’t bother adding salt although some people use Epsom Salt which is less harmful to the soil.

You have talked this to death. But originally the question was about wildlife safe weed killer. Is the vinegar /salt /soap proven to be butterfly etc. safe?
