7/12/22 I caught some pan fish this morning, but the surprise was my 7th by-catch snakehead. Caught with a 3/16th jig head with a gulp minnow on it on my panfish rod and reel. What a battle. I had more trouble with it when I got it on shore. What a wild strong fish. If I was younger I would target them.

Nice catch. New to me. I've never seen one. I bet he was a handful.

I just read an article a couple weeks ago where they said that snakeheads aren’t displacing other species as much as they thought they would. Seems like they got a bad rap for that, but that they are a great game fish and ferocious fighters

Slimshady - yes! I used to be in the camp of kill 'em all, they're seriously impacting the food supply of the bass and crappie population here in Virginia. But recent studies by the Virginia DWR, esp. J. Odenkirk's findings, corroborate what you said. So the past couple years I've been targeting them--they're more fun to catch than bass and they're the best tasting freshwater fish I've ever eaten.

Are they good eating? It’s a pretty fish. Great catching on a pan fish rig.

Good Morning AndyS, Can you recommend a land based location in your area where we can take a couple of kids fishing for bluegill?

Rhyno - I know it's a ways from you but in CA they've been caught at Silverwood Lake in San Bernardino if you're ever down that way.

Where did you hear that from I fish there a lot have not heard about them in the lake.
Does not mean they are not in there just wondering how you got the information. I would like to try for them if they are in there I know they have snakes that try to get in the boat sometimes.

DCG, thanks first I have heard this will have to do some research 🧐 on snakeheads. Looks like you would fish for them like you would bass fish usually fishing deep for striper.

Drifter - these guys, at least Northern Snakehead, run SHALLOW--5 ft. or less. So they hang out along the banks, hiding in the vegetation, and in shallow coves, esp. if covered with surface vegetation, pads, etc. And yes, I use bass lures, mostly weedless topwaters and T-rigged creatures and senkos, but I have caught them in open water tossing crankbait, chatter and buzzbaits, poppers, ploppers, and swim jigs, parallel to grasslines. But the common denominator is shallow.
