I have been putting off getting surgery on my left hip. I really didn't think I would live this long. I am 84 now and I'm looking for advice, encouragement or discouragement. I know now I should have had it taken care of 3 years ago, maybe too late. I'm pretty healthy other than. the hip pain.
You will be so amazed at the first step without pain when you get out of surgery. They tell you to stand up and your brain is thinking, Hell no, I just had surgery, but you try it and holey mackerel, no pain. It just works and you shuffle down the hall and back and it truly is miraculous. It takes a couple of weeks for the incision sit pain to go away, but it is not bad. You will wonder why you waited, good luck man.
I agree with previous message. I have had both hips replaced and it really works. Just listen to your physical therapist and you will be glad you did it.
Had both hips replaced in my early 70s. No pain meds needed and recovery was quick. Done with the walker in about a week. Actually snow blowed my driveway 8 days after the 2nd surgery ( doc was not happy) Be sure to go to PT and do plenty of walking.
Good luck.
I agree with all the above. My surgically repaired hip is better than my other hip.

I had both hips replaced same year 2 months apart no pt required cutting and splitting wood 30 days later go for it instant pain relief
I am scheduled for a knee replacement, next week, hoping it will relieve the pain I have been suffering and let me walk again. Probably will be looking at knee number 2 in the future! 👍👍🙏🏻🙏🏻
I had both replaced, first in 2009 and second in 2011.Rehab is hard but you can manage it. Get your doctor to prescribe rental on cpm machine. Use it when pain is really bad after surgery. Worked for me. Wife had nerve freeze which helped for about 6 weeks after surgery. Just a couple ideas to help.
Thanks for all the replies. Very helpful.

Ne. Fisherman, you will definitely experience a pain reduction. I thank the lord daily for the skills of my Orthopedic Surgeon.
I’ve been where you are. I had bi-lateral knee replacement, which is both done at the same time, 15 years ago.
We’ve discussed this topic a number of times here. Many of our fellow stagers have had joint replacements of all kinds.
Personally my knees had degraded from sports and activities in HS, College and Coaching to the point that I couldn’t walk the mall while shopping with my wife, nor could I spend much time on my feet at all without heavy duty pain meds.
The surgery gave me my life back. Without it I’m sure that I would be cranky, bitter, moody and probably pretty heavy.
Now, I’m able to work out and walk 3-5 miles daily, and most importantly to me, get down the bank to the river to fish for Steelhead daily.
Congratulations on getting your knees fixed. It is truly a quality of life improving surgery.
God bless and best wishes!
you will wish you did it sooner.

Had my right hip done in March this year. Piece of cake. Went in anterior. About a 3 inch incision. Walked up and down hall 4 hours after surgery. After the second day I didn't even need Tylenol for pain. Within a week and a half I was walking without even a cane.

I highly recommend "due diligence" be performed, regarding the different joints available, as well as the different "techniques" of the surgery... I had a titanium and stainless steel/ some nylon installed as a "complete, upper and lower TOTAL hip replacement"; back in late 1998. I began taking an "applied electronics course", while still on crutches... Mine was NOT allowed to be "bearing any weight" for the first few WEEKS. ... Hell, I was only 40 years old, at the time and the orthopedic surgeon said that he was "giving me the Cadillac" ... I asked him: ¿How about the Rolls Royce? ... He said: "Actually, this one IS, more of the Rolls Royce."
I guess it was "typical" in that "time period", to have to get new ones installed after 10 or so years. He told me that this one, would "last me 'til I die!" So far, so good.
I say: RESEARCH all the options of manufacturers of the joints, as well as materials involved, also: ¿ Will this thing last me 'til I croak?
