In 1977 during a severe drought there were some area's cut off from the main body lake and the catfish were starving, poor fish but biting like crazy! Due to the drought no limits on doomed catfish, but a Texas fishing license ALWAYS IS REQUIRED!!!

Here my brother and I just using big cat rods and reels, we harvested plenty for eating and fish to share with people who needed it, two gentlemen fishing next to us probably had 25 to 30 nice sized channels. The spot where we was fishing is just off a bridge, where the normal filled lake gave access crossing to this section. A Texas Game Warden stopped, stood looking over towards us and yelled out, Show me your license men?! Each year fishing license have a different coloring, we held up our blue current licenses and the guy's next to us didn't and hung their head's down..I said ought ooooh! Took them both to talk to the judge with every fish, fishing equipment, and I'm sure they got a big fat fine. License were about $5 back then..it ain't worth it not getting them.

Never could figure out why someone wont go the legal route. I can think of 2 former neighbors that have that i don't care attitude.

They have yet to be caught, just a matter of time i guess.

I knew a guy and his wife that took that chance. They went camping almost every weekend and went fishing just about everywhere they camped. Both got caught on a pretty remote stretch of river that you would never dream you would run into anyone, let alone a fish warden. They both paid a pretty hefty fine. I don’t think either has fished since then

To me,it’s just common sense,in California the fine is listed as $100-$1000 but I’ve always seen a $450 fine handed out,it’s $77 for a license with secondary pole added,do the math

I was proud to buy my first license at 16. Desperate sustenance is the only excuse. I mentioned the hook&bullet tax recently. Duck stamp act '32, Pittman-robertson '37. Pays for conservation, wild properties, a little for law enforcement. Essential, we would not have the resources we enjoy without the tax on license, tackle, firearm related purchases.

When I was in Alaska the manager from California, had his parents fly up for the salmon runs. I heard him tell his parents don't worry, use my address and no one will know. In Alaska, you get a 1K reward if you turn them in, and they are found guilty. I didn't say a word but someone in the office must have, and turned them in, 2X meaning 2K to whoever told the fish and game.

fishing the west branch of the Penobscot river (near big eddy) I got to watch one of the wardens that I knew pull over two guys in a pickup towing a boat. He opened their cooler and just shook his head. Called for two additional wardens (only took about 5 minutes) . they had them stand about 25 yards apart behind the boat. the arriving wardens drove off with the truck and boat leaving them stranded. when I saw him later in the week he told me they had 30 fish ( limit 2 each) no licenses, unregistered firearms, and open bottles of whiskey. the judge impounded everything and put out a bench warrant for their arrest. Have no idea how they got out of there as there were only two of us with vehicles and we never saw them. it's 20+ miles to the nearest anything up there.they were screwed even if they had licenses.

I sent that happen last year my dad and I was out fishing the game warden pulls up ask for license we were good. The boat not to far from us had 3 guys none with license. They took the fishing gear and the boat. 95.00 per fish plus a 500.00 court cost. NC don’t play at all. Once you get caught you lose everything plus you can never get a license again. Crazy but rules are rules. The commercial fishing license is very expensive but they keep everything they catch in the nets. We witness one day a guy pulls up close to the pier drops his nets around the pier and suddenly no one was catching fish. Just wish the game wardens would have shown up then.

I purchased my first license when I was 16. Went trout fishing got checked. I've been checked several times over the yrs always legal. I wanted 2 guys start trout fishing too early. Nice little mtn stream. A few minutes later 2 guys between me n those guys stood up n took the jacket off. Both game wardens. Busted I had to grin. They couldn't wait 15 minutes.

Thank you Rhyno, we get what we pay for. I love my two pole stamp, bait over there while I cast all my favorites. My duck and pheasant stamps allow me to carry my favorite shotgun without being accosted in the fields. I'll pay. I hope it stays reasonable. Hunting, bird stamps are mostly a donation these days. Ambition is gone. I still go at will because I can. Closet queen is no longer a gun, it's just stuff.

In answer to your question, ME! 30+ years ago I had taken a few days away from my business to help my mom with upkeep on her place. At one point I became a bit overwhelmed and went to the lake with rod, reel and nightcrawlers. I hiked down a steep hillside to get into a cove. On the shore there were the leavings of what had been a party the night before. Beer bottles and melted plastic bags and just trash everywhere. I started cleaning it up. On my third trip up the hill with a bag of trash I was confronted by a game warden who asked for my license. I didn’t have one. He saw that I had been cleaning up down below and for my efforts he let my faux pas pass with just a warning but I’ve never failed to have one on my person since.

What license?
Jersey bayshore.
“During late November through December, Marine Region CPOs from the entire unit were incredibly busy responding to complaints involving the illegal harvesting of striped bass along the Raritan Bayshore. More than 500 illegal striped bass were seized from fishermen found in violation. CPOs issued more than 200 summonses. Most summonses issued were for undersize fish, however many individuals possessed double digit numbers of fish. Additional summonses issued included possessing overlimit, oversized, and mutilated striped bass as well as failure to obtain a saltwater registry, interference, and littering while fishing. The overwhelming number of violations occurred between Perth Amboy and Union Beach.”

I can't stand this kind of total disregard for our Fisheries inland or from sea! I'm just an average Joe but hard-core fisherman. But have the utmost respect for Fishing regulations and cannot stand this kind of abuses. This makes me sick! 😠

Fishing is a privilege, not a right! I am happy to pay for the privilege to get out and enjoy Nature and all the benefits it provides. I was proud to pay for my first legal fishing and hunting licenses.
I do wish there was a better break for the Veterans and the Seniors, but those are other issues.
