Well, you could be correct. However, they would starve if there were no generous fishermen around to give them left over bait. Just Sayin...RJS

I've watched them walking through the shallows, very slowly, looking around, and then BAM! They harpoon a small fish with their bill, flip it up in the air, and gobble it down. They're a blast to watch.

Thanks mistred64. I had plenty of time to snap a pic while I wasn't catching fish.

If he can't spot a fish through that perfectly calm water, it's not too likely you'll catch any, but, how can ya resist dragging a subtle action topwater around for a while ? Just might coax one up from a deep whole or from under the bridge. Is that place open at dawn? Must beautiful then.
Great spot for the handicapped angler, or someone with balance and mobility problems, like me. Glad I took full advantage of my fishing opportunities when I was fully functional.
I often long for the days when I would attach my 2" knotted rope to a tree and descend steep banks and fish streams that were essentially inaccessible to all but the most reckless canoeists.( Never saw any yaks back then ). Phenomenal stretches of water with the most beautiful scenery imaginable, and NO TRASH !

Yes. Public dock. One of three. Sunrise at 6:30. Bait shop nearby opens at 7 am. We are there by 7:15. Beautiful area. I'll take a pic of the other side of lake next time instead of a herron.

Greg... Hope ya get lucky again and catch that mirror look water again. Not sure why that calms my spirit so well, but it sure does. Is this spot a Tennessee State Park, or municipal park ? It's somewhere I'd like to visit if I happen to get nearby someday. If it's not privileged information, would ya please post the name and locality ? T I A nutz

Sure nutz. A Knoxville city park - Concord. On Northshore Drive. West side of Knoxville. Locals call them the T-docks. One is shaped like a T. The other two go straight out about 50-75 feet. We've caught bass, bluegill, skipjack there. Most are fairly small. Occasionally, you will get a bigger one.

They are amazingly quick in the air and when they stalk fish in the shallows. It's interesting to watch them.

Sounds to me g, he was watching you and decided not to waste the energy as there were no fish around to catch.
