Flyguy knows trout (among other things).
The suggestion about the Power Bait is good as well.
I have caught them on canned corn on a jig, below a bobber, on sweet peas threaded on a hook, too. Fish those close to the bottom with slip bobbers!

Thank you! I'll give that a try!

Hi, Kathy. I have not been to Upstate NY for many years, but when I went frequently I realy enjoyed the area and the people. The country side reminded me a great deal of parts of North Georgia.
Good Luck!

Thank you it is beautiful in upstate! Thanks again!

I've never caught a trout

I'm not typically a trout fisherman but I've caught quite a few (but in California) so maybe my inexperience might match up a bit with yours and it could bring some success. My typical set up starting from the hook end is a very small treble hook on a very light monofilament leader, 2 to 4 pound test depending on how line shy they are. The leader length depends on the depth of the water and where the trout are staging. That is hard to tell from the shore (no fish finder) so you'll have to experiment with different lengths in different locations. The other end of the leader you tie a loop knot. So your leader consists of a treble hook on one end and a loop not on the other. I'd suggest starting with a 4 foot to 6 foot leader. Set that aside when you've got that rigged. On your main line, slide your line though an egg sinker and tie on a swivel snap. The egg sinker can slide easily up and down the line and that can be important when the fish take the bait. So then, put powerbait or an inflated nightcrawler on the treble hook and attach the loop end of the leader to the swivel snap. When you cast out, the egg sinker will provide the weight to get you out there and the powerbait or inflated nightcrawler will float above the egg sinker. Reel in until you feel the weight of the egg sinker and stop, maybe giving just a little slack. Trout tend to let go if they feel initial resistance and that's how the sliding egg sinker comes into play. How long to leave it there comes from experience but that kind of rig you could leave it in one place for 10 to 20 minutes and it wouldn't be unusual. If nothing picks it up, bring it closer to shore maybe 5 -10 feet at a time and let is sit there again. Repeat the process in different locations until you find fish. If you do catch fish, knowing what you were doing and where, i.e. how far out, length of leader, type of bait, etc. will help you establish successful patterns. Trout tend to hang out together so where there is one, generally there are more. Don't be afraid to experiment and figure out what works. You will get snagged with this type of rig depending on the bottom so if you are in a lot of structure you might want to move. I have not found that trout tend to group around structure like bass do. Hopefully that helps a bit, as I mentioned before I don't trout fish much so I'm no authority but it has worked for me. Perhaps someone else can give you better advice so feel free to disregard mine.....lol. Good luck!!
I've never caught a trout br br I'm not typicall... (show quote)

Wow thank you so much I appreciate it!

Try Berkley Pinched Crawler floating, put a split shot, "just enough to sink the floating crawler" about 18" above the hook with the pinched crawler. Then cast upstream and across, let the worm sink but not snag, just let it bounce until it is out of the strike area.

I've never caught a trout I'm so sad about this I love fresh water trout but don't have anyone to show me how. I've been fishing in the westerlo reservoir with no luck I'm about to try the Onesquethaw Creek in South Bethlehem NY which looks shallow any tips?!!!!??

O 8 . . . Glad to see all the helpful tips you're getting. Have one minor addition, if you use split shot to bump the bottom, I recommend using the ones without the "ears" as the are more prone to snag on the bottom. Also crimp them on carefully, so as not to weaken your line. Better to have one fall off than lose a good fish. Good luck and glad you reached out to us.
It's also worthwhile to ask at your nearby bait and tackle shop for info on where the local trout catches are best. Spend a couple of $$'s and take the advice offered. nutz

Firstly, know I am a bass fisherman with little to no trout knowledge or expertise.
However, back in the '80s, I did catch trout from the Onesquethaw in 2-locations.

East Berne - Intersection of Rt 443 and Cole Hill Rd. As soon as you turn onto Cole Hill, park on the right by the small creek overpass. Fish westward. This stretch is shallow and I'd recommend you want waders to position yourself in the middle of the narrow creek, throwing upstream, drifting something downstream with any current or into a pool. Regarding what "something" is, told you I'm a bass guy. Suggest search Youtube for trout creek lures and baits. Back then, we probably threw small hooks, 4# line, a split shot with a nightcrawler or worm piece on ultralight rod & reels. They were jumpers.

Clarksville - Intersection of Slingerlands Ave. & Tarrytown Road. Fished this a few times with work friends who lived in Clarksville. We fished from shore. I remember several pools and a falls which back then you could access the falls bottom.

East Berne easier to fish. A nice walk along the cow fields.

This is how is was 40 years ago. Worth at least a scouting run.
I've lived in Southern California for a couple decades now and greatly miss fresh water opportunities. There's no water here.

Hope this adds to your arsenal.

Don't miss the significance of the recommended "inflated nightcrawler."
You need to purchase the Worm Blower. Bass Pro Shops.
As I generally don't fish live bait, I do know that if I ever use a worm or more likely a night crawler, that baby is air injected.
Got out-fished 5-1 with a friend once who injected and I didn't.
