I've never caught a trout I'm so sad about this I love fresh water trout but don't have anyone to show me how. I've been fishing in the westerlo reservoir with no luck I'm about to try the Onesquethaw Creek in South Bethlehem NY which looks shallow any tips?!!!!??

Welcome to the Forum, Kathy, What you want to do is to go to that creek with a pair of waders on and a spinning rod and reel and some nightcrawlers. Wade out to the middle of the stream, below a rifle and toss that crawler, upstream, that's on a size 10 hook and without any weight on it, into the "seam" of the rifle. If there is any trout in there, he will take that crawler. Keep your rod tip high and your 4# FC tight so that you will be able to see any tic-tics. Good luck, and let us know how you did. There may not be any trout in there.

The suggestion about the Power Bait is good as well.
I have caught them on canned corn on a jig, below a bobber, on sweet peas threaded on a hook, too. Fish those close to the bottom with slip bobbers!

Hi, Kathy. I have not been to Upstate NY for many years, but when I went frequently I realy enjoyed the area and the people. The country side reminded me a great deal of parts of North Georgia.

I fish in upstate ny in irondequoit and oatke creeks with spinners - Look for the deeper holes and the undercuts next to shore..any submerged logs too. good luck

How long to leave it there comes from experience but that kind of rig you could leave it in one place for 10 to 20 minutes and it wouldn't be unusual. If nothing picks it up, bring it closer to shore maybe 5 -10 feet at a time and let is sit there again. Repeat the process in different locations until you find fish. If you do catch fish, knowing what you were doing and where, i.e. how far out, length of leader, type of bait, etc. will help you establish successful patterns. Trout tend to hang out together so where there is one, generally there are more. Don't be afraid to experiment and figure out what works. You will get snagged with this type of rig depending on the bottom so if you are in a lot of structure you might want to move. I have not found that trout tend to group around structure like bass do. Hopefully that helps a bit, as I mentioned before I don't trout fish much so I'm no authority but it has worked for me.
