Finally got out yesterday for a kayak trip. My fishing buddy called in sick so I went solo. Caught this eye on my first cast then minutes later hooked a much bigger one that got away at the boat. Everything died out after that except for a small white bass.

You can't beat a walleye unless you have two.

Exactly! Thing is, seems like I got there at the tail end of an aggressive bite happening at sun up. I’ve heard it’s good to fish for eyes before the morning sun hits the water, like just before dawn. There’s an off switch after the sun hits. I got there 7:30 ish after rowing my rear off!
What did you use for bait? Guessing they have already spawned!
I was or still may, planning a trip out there. Do you fish Elephant Butte?
Canis- I used a 3 inch castaic swim bait very lifelike on a 1/16 jig head. But I think they will bite just about anything small and white or chartreuse… right time and place more important. I fish the butte once in a while but I know caballo better.

I'll have to try and make the trip out there. I was stationed at Holloman and drove over there but didn't fish. I got into shooting. Wish I had, it would be a different kind of fishing. If I remember right, it was really rocky.
Fished for walleyes in Nebraska using crankbaits as late July and August. May June lindy riggs with leeches and slip bobber in the weeds. Bass fisherman would complain when they had tournaments that the walleyes were in with the bass. HA!

I used to shoot and hunt quite a bit. Deer in the sacramentos east of Alamogordo and elk in the Gila. Now I just fish. Yes caballo is very rocky; either that or muddy and flat; no weed beds to speak of. Very dark water typically and shallow. There are prettier lakes but this one has a lot of fish. Crank baits work good too but get stuck a lot so I stick with jigs mostly.

Nice WE Joe, glad you made it out & with your Yak. All the water here is still solid!

Sounds challenging, may have to make out there this year.
Have fond memories of the fishing and hunting down there. I lived in Las Cruces from 1970 through 1979. Caballo and butte were a blast. Walleyes, bass, and the spring white bass run.. Love the dove and quail hunting, deer and my one lone elk trip in the Gila. Trout fishing in mid summer in the mountains couldn't be better. Caught some really nice browns (20+") up near Ruidosa. And the duck hunting at Caballo in the fall--outstanding.
Up here I'm still looking at snow and hard water.
